I bought some complete RD400 motors for a project. I'm going to use one motor and then pass the others on.
I had a look at them and there doesn't see to be any marks scribed on the cases behind the stator to make sure the cases halves are matched. Am I looking in the wrong place or did they not care about it on the aircooled bikes?
Sorry if this is a dumb question, its the first ever aircooled motor I've taken apart.

I think I got an answer from a local shop that used to build a lot of RD/LC/RZ's.
He said the RD's didn't really have engraving on the cases to identify matching halves, however he did say its worth while doing it yourself before taking the cases apart and keeping the halves together as a set.

That doesn’t sound right to me.
I’ve never had an aircooled so can’t comment on them. However LC and YPVS engines all have the scribing behind the stator to match the case halves.
I’m sure someone will confirm the aircooled models soon.

With this in mind if the engines are all split I’d recommend trying to match them before cleaning if possible looking for Mark’s that span both halves.
Probably best to mark them as a pair afterwards.

Yes, Its really strange. I had a look at all 4 sets of cases and non have any scribe marks.
I'm going to scribe the last 4 digits of the serial number on the bottom case when I'm splitting them. At least I'll be able to join the same halves together again.

Not strange, no match marks on case halves until 1980, or TZ cases for that matter.
