After years of throwing money at other people to make things I bit the bullet and bought my own last night Should be here Thursday π I'll have to either get square eyes on YouTube or find a nice person to show me how to use it (after I've either converted to single phase or bought a 240-415 converter Steve

nice little toy, looks like my old machine !
You'll need an invertor, they are cheap enough these days, get a "soft start" one, half decent ones cost around Β£100 to Β£150, you can set them up so that you can have variable speed, the 3ph motor will handle it no problem.
You'll need to know the power of the motor and get the appropriate invertor, don't be tempted to go for one over the top, its a waste of time/money, if its a 1kw motor, then get a 1kw/1.5kw invertor, don't get a 2.2KW, its not necessary
Shout if you need any help

Doesnβt surprise me Steve I know how much NK charge now some of it I could never do, but some isnβt beyond the abilities of a man with a lathe. Youβll have to offer your service when youβre up and running. π

Looks dangerous- be careful with your fingers ππ Lol, I know π° Oh and never leave the key in the chuck π Steve When I was at the training centre learning how to use machinery, I was taught that when the chuck key was in the chuck then your hand must be holding it at all times. If the instructor saw a key in the chuck and you weren't holding it you would be warned the first time and kicked out of the centre the second time. It's a rule that I still use to this day for anything that needs a chuck key.

Looking at that has taken me all the way back to school days. Nice one, remember to hang your tie on the coat pegs before using it!

I decided to grab one now giving that modern technology classes don't include this kind of thing and the rate schools are closing/being refurbed/New schools built then these will soon be lost
Imagine school kids actually having to turn the wheels to make something instead of a computer program

Nice buy Stevo π
You can find formulas online to convert to single phase with a few start/run capacitors π I did it a while back on a compressor

Most chuck keys have a spring loaded coller to prevent starting with the key in the chuck. I notice the guard is interlocked so no need for newer key. I used to love working on a lathe, very therapeutic.

Nice buy Stevo π You can find formulas online to convert to single phase with a few start/run capacitors π I did it a while back on a compressor Matt π» Cheers Matt The motor should be able to run on 240 but will be a lower speed A lot of motors are designed to start on 240 then shift to 415 to reduce the massive start current (star delta starter) so the motor could be reconfigured The complication is that the motor can be reversed with a switch which I don't think you can do with the coils wired as star. I'll probably buy a converter as at least I'd then have 3 phase 415v for anything else I buy I can feel a nice floor standing pillar drill coming on π Steve

I'm glad I cant accommodate a lathe like that, good job too, dread to think how many hours I'd spend on it. But at least there would be no psyco of a teacher in the room who was prepared to throw lumps hammers at problematic pupils.... and he did...... and missed....

Did you go to my school? π Our teachers used to through blackboard ( can I write that) dusters at us on a regular basis. One of our teachers must have been a sniper in the war, he could turn from the blackboard and throw a piece of chalk and hit the fingers of the kid who was talking in one swift movement. He would also throw the duster if thats what he had in his hands. That chunk of wood flying past your ear on its way to some poor kids fingers... still frightens me.
