Hi all
Ok need a straight simple answer please
Am I right in saying that once your bike reaches its 40th year no MOT is required?
And then on the following April following it’s 40th birthday you can apply for a historic vehicle to get your free road tax?
Just my MOT and tax is now expired on my bike that was first registered in April 1981 so if the above is correct I just need to tax it for now and no need to get a current MOT?
And clarification most welcome
Best wishes Al

Thanks Rob
Got another question please
As it’s an import the front of the log book states declared manufactured in 1981 and the dating certificate states April 1981
But inside the date of first registration is 01/07/2019?
I guess this is just the date it was registered on the DVLA system and the bike is classed as manufactured in 1981 as the DVLA gave it an age related plate (W reg) so the 40 year rule stands?
Many thanks Al

Mine is a 1980 ,i had to wait until April 1st to change to historical vehicle so you probably will have to wait until April next year

Al, my advice on this is do it as soon as it's allowed. I have a sneaky feeling the need for an MOT and tax might be withdrawn. However if your bike is already classed as historic then it should stand. Maybe.

DVLA did it automatically for me, and even sent a tax refund for a few months after April I’d been paying.

I think you need a current MOT (and TAX??) for the bike to be moved to the Historic Vehicle Class.

I think you need a current MOT (and TAX??) for the bike to be moved to the Historic Vehicle Class. Not so, mines been off the road for a while now, took my V5 to the post office, and they taxed it and sent it off to be reclassified as historic. Just waiting for it to come back, but on line check shows my bike taxed and mot ok. And mines registered in 82, but built in 1980.

That is interesting, as one of my LCs is registered as a 1985 B reg, but is a 1981 model... How did you prove it was built in 1980?

Two different dates on the V5 doc, built and registered, Check your V5.

That’s an interesting read I see it states that as long as either the registration date or manufacture date is greater than 40 years no mot is needed? So even if my registration date on the V5 is 01/07/2019 as the log book states vehicle manufactured in 1981, and as a W plate runs from August 1980 to August 1981 the bike should now not need an mot and historic Reg can be applied for next April? So hopefully happy days next April Best wishes Al

Looks like I have two LCs which were late registered, but both say they were new when first registered. I have a 1981 bike registered as 1984 and a 1982 registered as 1985. Will contact DVLA to see if I can get them updated to show the correct date. Probably just need a dating letter and a nicely worded letter to DVLA???
This might be worth checking for all your older bikes :-)

I think I will leave as is for now and see what happens next April when I apply for historical registration

The DVLA will work from the manufacture date if you can get a dating cert then they will work from that not the 1st reg date. Years back i had a car that was imported and was given the reg of the time, but i got it on historic no tax with its manufacture date even tho the plate it wore was later and should have not had free tax etc.
