Mate of mine is into all kinds of weird and wonderful things, couple of weeks ago he was banging on about cold water therapy advocated by a bloke called wim hoff I’m normally quite cynical about these things, he told me he has been having ice cold showers outside for a few years, persuaded me to try it inside at home. So for the past two weeks I’ve been doing it every morning, 5 minutes under an ice cold shower. The results for me, more energy during the day, waking up refreshed and sleeping better, my left leg (I’ve arthritis) far less painful. Just thought I’d mention it on here to loads of other middle aged farts who might benefit.

I've heard similar stories about it's health benefits.... done it when I was young. There is nowt like the feeling after climbing out of the sea or a beck! But turning the shower to cold....takes some ermmm bollix? If you can find them that is.....

I have f**ked water pressure so no power for a shower...however I do wash my face in cold water every morning. Been doing that all my life. Certainly wakes me up if nothing else.

A few years back we were in Helsinki for Christmas, always wanted to do a Nordic Christmas
Whilst at one of the harbours in Helsinki as I was looking at some of the old, however remarkably good condition, wooden sailing ships stuck in post due to ice, I noticed someone climbing down a ladder on the wharf wearing only a pair of gloves, a pair of wetsuit boots and a pair of budgie smugglers.
This person then swam about 50m along the wharf to the next ladder and climbed out of the water. He then walked in our direction and I remarked how odd it was for me to see someone swimming in freezing, literally, water. He was a friendly fellow and told me he does it every day no matter the weather or temperature and had done for 15 years, he informed us he never had a cold or a flu in all of those 15 years. I asked him what the gloves and boots were for he said they were to stop his skin sticking to the steel ladder when he got out, he then said I'm off to the sauna, a wooden building not far from where we were standing, neither of us had any idea what the building was.
Go figure
I should say not for me, it has to be at least 30C before I go swimming, and that's the water temperature !!

Last time I swam in the sea was 09, on my last holiday. I'ts still "cold" even in summer, but strangely after a while you get completely used to it. Once it is up to my knees (about a foot..) I'm fine with it. Will do it again one day hopefully.

Finland, what a country. First flew out there in mid December (I used to be a courier) when I was just 18. I didn't even know where it was. Flew Finnair and I got an upgrade so sat in first class next to a very attractive Finnish lass. Dinner was served and first up looked like Minestrone soup to me. I tried a spoonful and it was lovely. The girl next to me almost wet herself laughing, turned out it was a salt water dip for cleaning your fingers. It got worse. We landed in a total white out. I had on jeans, a T shirt and a jean jacket. Must have been -15. The walk from the plane to the terminal really drummed into me what cold really was. My hotel had tripled glazed windows, a swimming pool and a sauna and I availed myself to all of this. Met up with another courier and she has been to Finland before. I could tell by her clothing and the fact she had bought booze with her (the bar wanted £5, in 1983, for a small glass of lager). We got tipsy and went outside to build a snowman, then had some fun in her bedroom, then got totally bladdered. Breakfast was, err, interesting but I did enjoy smoked herring. Went back a few times after that, never saw the girl again but the place is fantastic.

A mate of mine who's quite a bit younger than me but has chronic arthritis started telling me about his ice baths and how great he feels afterwards.
I told him about someone slapping me repeatedly across the face and how great if felt when they stopped..........

Wim Hof has lot of followers here in NL. Even my wife swims everyday in a lake. No protection. 3 times a week we go together. But i like to crawl and use neoprene. She calls me a wimp. And i agree🤗😉

My Mrs has a friend and her husband who practice Wim Hoff breathing and she joins them once a week to do breathing and wild water swimming in local lake and if not swimming in the lake in their back garden they have a barrel that they fill with cold water and then ice cubes and climb in for 2 minutes submerged upto their necks. But get this still wraps herself up in a blanket when watching tv and puts extra blankets on top of the bed at night meanwhile I sleep with just a sheet over me as she complains its cold - go figure. Then partway through the night i wake up boiling because all the extra blankets are now piled on top of me.

We travelled up to Inari and stayed in a hotel there, typical Nordic hotel made pretty much from pine. A series of short corridors with rooms either side leading to common areas with a roaring fire in each. The rooms were only large enough to swing half a cat, but comfortable and cosy all the same. When we got up in the morning the manageress came up to us to explain that it had been a very cold night, it was currently minus 16C, and you’ll love the terminology here, she advised it should heat up to minus 10C So out we went to brave the cold and we were able to organise a snow mobile tour of the frozen lake and surrounding forests, well it didn’t heat up as promised, it went the other way to minus 32C according to the guide. The amount of clothing we had to put on for the snow mobile was incredible, we were asked if we had warm clothing, and we thought we had, the guide just smiled and said not quite enough. I went from an XL size of clothes to XXXL to fit everything on and then came the suit on top. We had learnt in Helsinki not to get fully dressed until you were close to the door to get geared up, the first time we put on all our gear on in the room and by the time we got to the exit we were cooking and had to take most of the gear off to cool down, the things you learn. This time we didn’t have to walk too far, surprisingly we weren’t hindered in our movement by having so much clothing on despite looking like a Michelin man (and woman). The ride was awesome and being able to ride a bike was really helpful particularly in the tight turns using body weight to manoeuvre the snow mobile The guide hit a patch of water that had broken through the ice then was covered in snow so it didn’t freeze, his track hit this patch and with me following in his wake my visor and screen were instantly covered in ice as the water froze immediately on contact with the cold air, it was then a case of lifting the visor high enough to see where I was going but low enough to stop my face being frozen from the wind chill. This was probably the highlight of the trip until we got to Norway, that’s another story

Well... the breathing plan I tried this morning was The "F" plan. It's repetition of the letter F done on the inhaling of a breath rather than the exhaling and goes like this.... F F F F F F F F .......F F F F ....FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF and so on until I reverted to another "F" plan..... as in **** this!!!
