All I'm having to maintain the bike in a dimly-lit garage, and can't fit better lighting (it's not my garage). Does anybody have recommendations for a wearable head lamp (as per this example uk.rs-online.com/web/p/head-torches/1864621 )? Clearly I need something for detailed work, not something that would allow 12 scouts to set up camp in the Brecon Beacons (I'm unsure about lumens brilliance and lights which have a long(ish) focal point). If it's not made in China (yeah right), that would be a bonus. Thanks.

Plenty of cheap headlamp torches around, aldi, toolstation, screwfix and the like, and cheap too. I have a couple from aldi and they are excellent, far easier than my old speelo miners type, night fishing head torch... that was Britsh made though, doubt any of the others are... Have a look at fishing tackle shop ads, they generally stock them.

Just like you do (or will if you dot already) with cheap glasses when you lose your close vision

I would have thought a Car battery and nice led panel light is a portable solution….

What about a rechargeable LED worklight, usually last a few hours too, some with low/high settings.

We used similar to this where I worked (but the RS components version) used to get plenty of abuse, but seemed to break a bit too often, they were in some harsh enviroments though. As you mentioned, this one could be battery powered via the cigarette lighter plug if need be, and still work/charge at the same time. www.toolstation.com/zinc-rechargeable-work-light-ip65/p83731

I use multiple LED 'torch worklights' every day to see what Im doing.
They are like a thick marker only a bit longer. Rechargeable (USB, Li-ion batt) and fold in the middle. Magnetic on back and base as well. light can be directed out the end (like a torch) or from the top of the side ( as a worklight). Has bright and brighter settings. Lasts for hours and hours (10ish?) on a charge.
I used these when we had a power cut at my mates workshop a few years back and were trying to fix a gearbox on a race car before the event. To keep going I used the magnets to stick two of these on the steel of the overhead light (mains powered so it was off) over the gearbox bench, both aiming down. Great light, easily able to work. After about 10mins one of the lads from the next workshop came in and started going on about how its always him who loses power and we are always ok... moan moan etc... Er, look around mate... these are the only two lights in the huge workshop and there is no radio playing... lol
Anyway bright enough to fool your neighbours...
sadly no pics i could find on the net as its an old model but plenty similar out there bbut perhaps not same decent spec. If you can find one of these (its an Eiger brand, but seen em with other branding) its a great light for around a Brit tenner each when I got em. All my family and mates have em too as I told everyone to get some for their house and shed and they all love em too.

I work in dark cramped places a lot. Led Lenser is a good choice and from what i understand a high end product. There is another brand which is my favourite as it is a little smaller in size for its light range. It's the Fenix HM65R (it's Chinese).
Also you can buy flat panel type lighting which is rechargeable. They are similar to the shape of a tablet and can be fixed on a stand or magnetic base. These give a lot of soft light and are also multipurpose.
