Wow now that is crusty!
I was looking at the pic and my mind was spinning, thinking how much of a transformation some blasting/paint/powder and plating will bring that back.
Superb project, lets hear more!

Ok, this will make things easier... As you can see above, Ive adjusted the links so we can see the pics... Its simple to do... this is what I added, can you do this for the ones you post? Strip off the info after .jpg and add the IMG tags:

I'd be really happy if some of my builds had started off this good and complete, looking at your pictures its mainly re plating and paint that is needed, you shouldn't need to spend 100's of hours searching for parts. Looking forward to the restoration pictures.

The good, Tank was solid and like this inside: ( img )https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/ae298/pbsiggs/Yamaha_RZV500_Gas_Tank_-_59.jpg( /img) Hmmm well that didn't seem to work !! I typed it in sorry for my ineptness where did you get the image tags from?

Looking forward to the restoration pictures. Yes was very complete but several hard to find parts were needed right off the bat! LH side panel obviously, All brake rotors and the 2 fork stansions pitted beyond limits (Thanks Norbo for stancions). Turn signals, mirrors broken, rear mudgaurd and top snorkels were missing, headlight glass chipped. All parts sourced from all over the place luckily. Of course multiple repairs on fairings for tabs etc. Rear brake was wirelocked making us think it was tracked at one time maybe!

Thank you Well the bike owes me a little over 8000 GBP after buying it and shipping to my friends place. So a very kind offer but I will decline it as gracefully as it was given. I expect to put at least that into it again to get it to as near concours restoration condition as we can......... Eagle has Landed Nice original bits still on it

Cool that you got the IMG tags working. Im loving this resto, not least as I have one in boxes to do myself. I'll echo whats been said above, such great news that it is complete as finding parts for one of these will for sure test your resolve and your bank balance these days as parts are silly expensive, especially NOS. I've been gathering parts for mine for years, im almost ready to start work

Wow you got some great parts nos. Well done. I was very excited when I found both the OEM throttle cables for sensible money NOS after some looking. Most people seem to think 500 owners are made of money (most are certainly not) but occasionally you can get lucky with pricing. Locating parts is hard, getting them for money that makes sense even harder! One thing I enjoy about the 500 is that its the next era of bike design. Instead of hiding things under petrol tanks like the smaller RD/RZs things like the electricals are simply bolted randomly from the frame and wires and cables go straight to where they are needed. The fairing hides 'the mess'. Even the birdcage holds the bottles on a 500. You can still see that same design being used today. And cos of that modern sports bike look terrible without their clothes on.

Quick Back Story. I met my friend by buying a bike from him. Before a final bid I phoned him and was really impressed with his knowledge and passion. I had also guessed he was an Ex Pat Brit. I thought I might have overpayed for a complete down to the last bolt Resto on a 1st Year GSXR. When it arrived I felt I had the bargain of the century. When this opportunity came up for the RZ I asked him for his advice to just paint it for me but plans changed. He fixed the panels perfectly after straightening the fairing stay and aligning the top cowl as it had been dropped at some point.

While the bodywork was off and being worked fixed and primed, he had a quick dabble with the engine. After fixing an ignition problem leak down checks were not perfect. He suspected rings sticking as the lower cylinders are flat and the weight of the pistons stationary all those years would have probably stuck. After soaking it a bit I got a bonus video

Trent, if you click 'Reply' in the purple bar below instead of typing in the box and clicking quick reply, it will take you to a different page to write your post. On this page, there's buttons to insert images, links, videos, change text etc
Good luck with the build!

Got the video on at last!!
Anyway Carbs were quickly cleaned as was Oil Lube Sys and Heavy Premix from a bottle (Thats why she's so smokey) and the thing started up from its 12-15 Year slumber and actually ran like a Champ! What a great relief. This also triggered the next stages of the Restoration.....More shortly

OK original plan was my friend to paint the RZ for me and then send it to the East Coast so I could restore the rest of the bike. Well with Covid came a small opportunity of time where I could see not only was my friend a brilliant painter but also a brilliant engineer. He had recently restored one of these himself so the decision was agreed he would carry on with the restoration. So spares sent to him and paint and decals ordered.

I assume you will be pulling it all apart anyway, but obviously after that amount of time you'd want to replace the crank seals etc.

I have to agree with Jon. You should do the crank seals. They are always shot especially after lying up so long

They are always shot especially after lying up so long You will see soon, we still have some catching up to do here I will try to do a bit more catching up each day. All will be revealed shortly...... So within a few hours this is how she looked...... This engine started right up after slumbering well over a decade and a full strip was decided on. It had sounded great with no bottom end noise but we had to confirm if it had ever been apart or messed with.
