Well there you go, you live and learn I'd never heard of one failing but obviously it's happened Steve only in the last year though Steve - think its their time ! Other thing it could be is the pickup, had a good few of those failing now, can cause low or high speed issues, but with it being a load issue, I'd start at the CDI just because I've had a few now - plus its a quick swap to test Reminds me, I need to fiond some more 1UA CDI's as I am out of them !

That’s interesting re several other bikes going the same way, same symptoms.
Are the original style 1UA CDIs still available or is it a case of finding a good working used one?
Or do people go straight for the Zeeltronic option?

Had a cursory look down the inlet tracts when the carbs were off and couldn’t see anything obvious. As the bike starts so easily, idles properly hot or cold and revs cleanly throughout the rev range, I don’t think the reeds are the culprit. Got the stator back from being properly checked out including the pick-up, it’s all good. So as Mutts has said, it all points to the 34 year old CDI that’s started to play up.
