Yes! All that too. Haha, I knew you guys would have been having the same experience as me! Defo the only way to get the parts for the right price was to have some small stuff stuffed in your pockets. I still have an assorted box of fuses and relays and the odd car badge in my garage from those days. I was going to mention the dogs... you also had to avoid their poo! The bit I did love was never knowing what they would have in. The mankier and more hidden the yard, the more likely there would be something really old or interesting there. There was also the interrogation from the hard as desk jockey as well when you arrived. Culminating in 'So, what you after mate? ' and if you just wanted a look round you needed to some up with some car they would defo have in stock, 'just some bits off an escort...' and he'd almost always direct you to the back of the yard where there were some 'pretty complete ones'. They were usually well picked over of course. Once in you could roam about amongst the carnage for as long as you liked.

There were two local yards I used back in the day - the car one, run by an old bloke and a huge Alsatian / Sabre Toothed Tiger cross where everything was priced in multiples of £5 and you filled your boots and toolbox.
Then there was the bike one which I think was run by the local Angels chapter.
The brothers partially stripped the valuable stuff off of bikes and left the rest for you to pick over. You didn’t haggle and didn’t try and nick stuff. They always just dropped screws, bolts and other small parts on the ground as they stripped the bikes which was a bit swampy in places so just swallowed up all of those now super rare and valuable green bolts and screws etc.

A nice XJR400 early one with the proper XJR clocks and nice custom paintwork not the later silly digital ones.

About 30 years ago I went with a mate to a local scrappy as they had a Suzuki car in there and I needed quite a few bits. With his help we got a new still in it's wrapper soft top, a roll cage, 2 props and a host of other little bits. He went back to the car and I went to the shed to see what this lot would cost me. In front trying to get served was an Asian lad with a Mini speedo. The tosser behind the counter said it's £50. I couldn't believe the price and this poor lad couldn't afford it. As he was leaving I was told ALL the bits I had would be a fiver. I think he said that just to rub salt into the wounds of this kid. I paid up and managed to catch up with the lad and said wait a minute, we'll get this for you. So my mate walks in and asks at the shed if they have a Mini as he needs a speedo...matey says will this one do? £4. You can imagine the look on the lads face as we handed it over.
