Careful selling over seas guys, my mate just told me he sold an item not bike related in Aus for almost £220 with post cost on max fees of £3.00, his payment ended up £191 extra £5 on top for international sale and charged him £20 for taxes for sale in Aus he says that's it for him and won't be selling again, what a rip off. So prices will rise as the sellers won't pay that once they find out, they will add it to the price as ebay will tell them to, as they did when they started charging fees on the postage costs.

Yeah, it’s called GST or
Grab Snatch and Take or Government Scam Tax
Same as the UK’s VAT
All transactions in Aus on eBay are hit by it, also on other online sites as well and you get slugged every time

The other thing that happens is that with the new way of getting paid via a bank account they say there is no fee like you get with PayPal...
Untill they pay in a foreign currency then there is a conversion fee as well ☹
I don't ship overseas now as been stuffed by folk saying it's faulty then I have to pay the return post
Only got 1 Malaysian guy I will sell to as he uses a UK shipping agent so only UK post charge and I'm not liable once it leaves the country

Hold on tho... if i buy something from here in Aus on any country specific ebay and have it sent here, I pay the Aussie taxes on what i buy as ebay adds it to the sale price before i pay. The seller should not pay any GST, thats up to me and has already been taken at payment.

The more I think about this the more I think your mate might have got the wrong end of the stick with these fees Tony. Im not saying ebay didnt charge him fees, they certainly do, what are UK ebay fees now? Here its 10% on the sale and the postage, then GST on any money you send to ebay for those fees at another 10% of that money.
So im assuming hes selling in GBP on ebay.co.uk and an Aussie buyer bought something, if hes selling on .com.au thats different and hes subject to different fees as outlined above.
There are some bits i dont understand about what he said:
1 - extra £5 on top for international sale
A charge like this will be in the agreement between you and ebay. Ive never seen anything like that. Can you show us where in the UK ebay agreement it shows this fee?
2 - charged him £20 for taxes for sale in Aus
This is just plain wrong as Ive said above. Ebay charge the Aussie buyer those fees. try this: find an item on .co.uk and change your postage place to Aus, use postcode 2000, thats the center of sydney. the price shown will jump 10%. ie its on top of the sale price the uk seller lists, not taken from it.
FWIW any uk seller listing in GBP will not lose a conversion fee as the buyer pays that, not the seller.
EDITED: Sitting here I worked back from what he received from what he sold to find the percentage. ie. if he sold something for £220 then ebay took something like 13% as that's £29 in fees, that gets you down to £191... Ok, so since I didnt know what uk ebay charges I looked online and then used an online uk ebay fee calc and lo 'n behold its 12.8% for fees and works out just like what i found above. So my hunch panned out, he just got charged the normal fee for selling an item on uk ebay. Nothing to do with selling to anyone outside of the UK at all.
Be aware with ebay offers than the special listing fees dont always apply how you might think. Ebay is sneaky like that, not all categories are covered and the offer only works at certain times or listings. Read the fine print.
12.8% seems a lot right? But... Previously it was more. Ebay charged you a fee (10%?)and then paypal charged you something like 3.8% on the money you received as well to process your money to you.
Back in the older days (earlier this year) fees were taken by paypal at source (ie when paid) and you didnt notice it so much, you were used to see them take something every time. Also, ebay took your fees monthly and you had a bill that was just fees to pay 4-6wks later. So, at the point of sale/payment the only money you lost was the paypal fee, the rest came later. Now using ebay's direct payment they take their 12.8% fee right when you get paid so you see exactly what the sale has cost you right when it happens.
So... yes im sure he thought the fees excessive and wasnt happy and it just happened to be this foreign transaction that he noticed it. Perhaps it was the largest one he'd done for a bit or its his first one with the new ebay payments system taking all the fees at source?
We all know that in the 2020's selling in ebay is not cheap, you will pay a lot in fees now and pay them rightaway. So, I think this guy's moan is valid about the costs of selling, but its NOT about selling overseas, its about ebay's fees in general and the message of why this happened to him on this sale has just been confused.
OK... The reason I want to make sure that we understand this here is that its hard enough for guys like us down here to buy stuff without mis-information floating about saying it costs you more to sell to us. There is enough of that BS now out there already.

I will look into it, but £220 sale on a £3 max fees listing is £217, he has received £191 into his bank account under the new way, that is a short fall of £26 after the £3 fee he should have been charged, now he may of rounded up the pennies to text me the info, I have not signed up to the new and won't be either, I won't be selling anything on there anymore.
Although he may not have ticked some box, allowing them to take tax from him not the buyer, I don't know, but the point is be careful selling overseas, make sure you check everything and all fees for doing so, most people just click OK to the terms not reading the 200 page book of confusing legal mumbo jumbo, and then carry on as before when changes happen, just be careful and double check everything.

The sales tax is confusing me too
Never had that as buyers responsibility but feck knows what they are doing now
The foreign sale fee will be due to it being paid in a different currency
As said I got it as I sold in GBP but buyer paid in Ringgit I assume or USD
Like the fee when you use your card in a foreign country
Thought standard eBay fee was 10% but usually a final sale fee offer on the go

Yes Jon, I agree with your edit in theory, but it was on a £3 MAX FEE listing, eg NO more than £3 fees, or that's how it used to work.
Yes its a 1st sale to Aus under the new terms, it was something collectable AC/DC related memorabilia.
I wonder if somehow the £3 fees doesn't include international sales, I don't know, point is be careful selling overseas.

Note VISA charges 3% on international transactions and Mastercard does not. I have a Mastercard just for international purchases.

Dont get confused in the wording. It maybe a £3 MAX FEE listing but the selling commission is fee payable. Its the listing thats £3 max not the sale.

The thing is now you pay the 12.8% on anything you sell even if your item is cash on collection, previous to this you’d of just paid the 10% to eBay and nothing to PayPal for a similar transaction .
