Took the head off the 250lc today and its still on the original pistons far as I can tell, would it be prudent to get a rebore or just leave it ?

Hell yeah 🤣
If that's still on standard bore it's way past its best unless it's had new barrels fitted within 10k miles lol

How’s it running? What’s compression like? Is where I’d start

You have done well to get 28k on original bore, so probably ready for a rebore. Do pistons show carbon below rings, and any wear marks in the barrel? As above, check compression, I think you looking for 100-110psi on a 250.
Not too expensive, prob max £200-£250 for rebore/pistons/rings/gaskets to refresh top end, especially if reason for poor running is down to this.

It may have different cylinders fitted, as opposed to the originals. Does it rattle? If your worried, take it to a reputable company and have the cylinders measured. It may need a re bore but don't rebore for rebores sake.

As above get reputable engineer to check bores and pistons. Obviously rings ware piston groves and can rattle which will allow cause blowbuy. Bores can look ok but ware in middle making piston skirt slap and rock. Excessive can snap pistons skirts off if thrashed alot. What part the country you based at so we can advise who to go to

Go to Linby see Ron Phillips Fahron engineering. He is excellent or if your closer to Lincoln go to Webb's and See Andy Webb or Steve his mechanic. My choice would be Ron tell him Mr Williams send you, were mates.

Thinking about it, if the 28000 miles is correct, it must have had new cylinders fitted if it's on original bore. I would say 8 to 10k miles is a guide to cylinder life, if you don't have a blow up.

I've had 2 ypvs motors, one at 26k and one at 29k that were both unopened and on standard bore
It is possible If they are treated well
