Not sure why there is a seal there, unless is to stop chain oil tracking down the shaft. Part number 9310412054 My gearshift doesn't have a circlip, only the gear change linkage. What model do you have? I have a 4L0

There's no seal in the stator cover above, gear shaft seal fits into the crankcase where the shaft passes through, there can be a bearing or a bush in the outer cover, to support the shaft, but as standard no seal.

I thought that too untill I bought a pattern oil seal kit and there was an extra small seal. It fitted in the stator case Also parts list shows a seal. Item number 10 Steve

Wow, didn't know that, not noticed a seal in any of mine. I stand corrected.
Begs the question why though, as seals are by nature intended to keep oil in, and if there was any leak, and tracking along the shaft, it will simply drip off with that seal in place ..... can't see the reason?

Agree. My seal was a pig to fit.

Oh well I won't bother fitting one then. As it seems a waste of time, I appreciate all your responses, thanks mate.

If you go on simply bearings or maybe your local motor factor may have one. 12mm shaft.

yep, defo supplied from new and there seems the only reason for it is to keep dust out of the plain bearing in the flywheel side case.

If you think of when it is fitted you smear grease on the bush then fit the cover
The inside is protected as it has the shift shaft spacer pressed against it so needs a seal on the outside to keep grease in and water/crud out
