That crash pick reminds me of coming over the Gooseneck at Cadwell, only to see an RD spinning around on it's footpeg, rider kneeling next to it.
I went one way, chap behind didn't see it until later and also came off. Red flag, but no injuries. I crashed at Park on the restart trying to take the chap in 3rd. I was always a liability on cold tyres. Well not just cold..
Fun days.

I added the hairpin to the list in September 2019. That was a gap of 35 years almost to the day between Cadwell crashes. Gooseneck one was trying to follow someone on a TZR 250 through there who was going a lot faster than I'd ever gone before and quickly realising that TZRs handle better than YPVS's. I actually only crashed 5 times whilst racing and once on a track day. Just thinking about it that's actually quite high for not even three full seasons. One of them was at Elvington. Came out of the hairpin straight into a left hander and someone is on his hands and knees in the middle of the track. I hit him and come off. Neither of us hurt. It was a mate of mine. How we laughed 🤔

Funny the talk of riding in europe on an R1. I did that a few times on mine. Like Julian I also thought it was really too fast for the road in the uk at least, the wide open and empty roads in France were certainly much less of a worry.
Funny you mention fuel. it seems weird to think all those countries had different money and many didnt accept uk credit cards. makes it sound like the 1800s not the 2000s. I was on way to 'ring and didnt bother to get any french francs as I figured id not need em as id not be in france very long. ie Hit Calais on a full tank and then zip along the coast up to Belgium, out of france before i was down to half a tank etc. Sorted... until i took a wrong turn on the motorway at Calais and ended up heading south not east... Eventually got back to Calais and was low on fuel, hours wasted and it had rained on me. sigh. Slowing down for a round about at Calais I was hit from behind / side by a frenchie on a moped on roundabout where i headed west, he didnt slow down at all as he came up behind me and legged it off into the distance, luckily no damage on my week old R1 and dont know how i kept it upright. I limped on conserving fuel and was on fumes pulling into the first fuel station in Belgium... phew. Back onto the motorway and nailed it to make up time... then i ran low of fuel in Germany next with the dash counting up and up the miles id run on reserve and the number was well into the tens before i realised there was not going to be any fuel on the motorway soon. so left at the next exit to chance my luck if i could find a town. Found a bloke on the outskirts of a village cleaning his bike on his driveway and asked him in broken germ'glish about fuel and he said 'in the village.... but its Sunday, they might not be open this late...'. Back on bike, conserving fuel again i finally found the station about 10 mins further on, came in on fumes yet again. Attendant was locking the door and heading home. He took pity on my pleading and let me fill up... Never been so glad to get a journey over with, totally nerve wracking!

He took pity on my pleading and let me fill up... Never been so glad to get a journey over with, totally nerve wracking! I did similar in Belgium. We were on the GSXR1100H. I ended up on the motorway by accident and running low on fuel. Trying to do the maths in my head, what does it do to a gallon, how much is in reserve, at what speed would it do the most to a gallon, 50, 60, 30? etc. Fortunately there were signs showing the distances to the next service stations. I worked out we were fine and hammered it. When we did the Corfu trip I think it was we had French and Belgian Francs, Yugoslav Dinari? Greek Drakma?, German Marks, Swiss Franks and Italian Lira. The only one no one wanted back was the Yugoslav. The inflation rate was so high I think it made it worthless. Right b@ll ache The YPVS had a better range than my @rse did I know that
