So my bikes finished (4LO) apart from paintwork,I get together some old panels and borrow a tank so i can run it in a bit and see whats what. Now the fork seals didn`t leak when i stripped it, but as they were out, i changed the oil(ancient) replaced the dust seals(split) and changed the fork oil seals. So out for a wee run, running pretty okay apart from spluttering at very small throttle openings(Still pissing about with air screws) BUTThe fork seals are paissing oil, thought they might settle but nope, been out three days in a row and still leaking So gonna have to remove the forks and put another set of seals in I suppose.. I am slightly miffed about the whole situation as its the last thing I was expecting. Do i feel better for venting my frustration on here? No, no i dont. I want to smash their shiny faces in

What make are the fork seals? Some crap ones out there. I only use gen Yam these days, expensive but as changing them is a timely exercise its worth the spend.
Also check you don't have any rust spots on the fork travel area. Also check you didn't overfill with oil. Some contrary/confusing data out there in terms of how much oil to use. Will have to check my notes.

Athena, I set the air gap to the manual spec rather than concentrating on the amount. Think its 148cc of oil and 195mm air gap.

I want to smash their shiny faces in I had a similar problem on a RD200, I replaced the fork seals with pattern ones (before I knew about only using gen seals) I did have some trouble before fitting them with deciding which way round they went, they looked very similar either way round, 50/50 chance and I fitted them the wrong way round maybe, by this time I had read about all the aftermarket seals being suspect shall we say, wondering if you had the same decision to make or if you put gen ones in, gen ones are easier to see which way they go and wondering if you made the same mistake as I did, I took mine out and bought gen Yam and no more issues.

My first thought was I`ve put them in upside down, they are Athena ones,I did them round about the start of the year, can`t remember if i had any second thoughts about which way. One things for sure though they are gonna have to come back out so I`ll see then..

I think your problem is the Athena seals. I bought a pair once and they were different fits, one was tight the other was loose, so I binned them and bought Yam. If you place the Athena one alongside a Yamaha one you will see the difference in quality.

Its a bagger, I`ve used pattern ones in my N1 and my two 125`s and never any bother, always use Athena gasket sets so thought they would be the better of pattern seals

I’ve had problems with seals leaking after a while in the past This time I stripped the forks down and replaced the bushes as well and this time bought seal kit from Norbo so this time hopefully will last longer than a couple of years May as well replace the bushes as well if you’re taking it apart anyway

One things for sure though they are gonna have to come back out so I`ll see then.. I suppose if you take a step back, the original seals were oil tight and the new ones leak, it can only be the seals. I always use Yam, where I can. Incidentally, I was reading about a fork oil that I used when I was 17. Bel Ray and get this "with seal swell". That was the one for me, dont know why maybe stopping leaks before they appear😁 www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Bel-Ray-Fork-Oil-SAE-10-W-seal-swell-Chopper-Robison-HD-AMF-NOS-16oz-/254622279342

NO, this is how we learn. I fitted some pattern cranks seal some years ago and they leaked from day 1. Smoke pissing out the right hand exhaust. Every days a school day.

As an alternative K Tech stock NOK seals which are of equal quality to OEM seals ( may well supply oem )
I wouldn`t want to use any oil that claims to swell my seals, that would cause more "stiction".
( I`m a bit OCD about suspension, done a few of Reactive Suspensions courses, I ride Hare and Hounds Enduro and play on MX practice tracks ,as well as occasionally taking the TL1000R on track, good suspension makes a huge difference even to an old slow git . )
