Hi Everyone, Following on from my gear shaft query I'm deciding what else needs replacing in the gearbox dept. On checking the rest of the gears on the input shaft I've come across some having faint 'striation' marks across the teeth. I apologise for the newb question but please can anyone advise me if this is normal or not. I'm hoping its only chips and pitting that I have to look out for. Its hard to tell, I suspect its boarder line. I recently picked up a mint gearbox for £100. Maybe worth considering?

There has been some discussion on this
It was suggested that badly worn gears didn't have those marks
I've never worried about the "stripes" on the teeth
As long as no discoloration from heat and no pitting behind the gear face I wouldn't worry

My thoughts are that you don't want any metal flakes from gear teeth at all as its obviously going to do some expensive damage ie other gears, bearings etc.. If you can get a g/b for £100 or so its probably money we'll spent and keep your other gb as a spare

In an ideal world yes but ypvs gearboxes are creaping up and most likely in the same condition as what you have
If you have had the gearbox in a running engine and know it to be quiet I'd stick with it
Especially if you have looked through the sludge in the sump and finding no "bits"
If concerned with anything then yes buy another.
As has been said it's difficult to tell from pictures
It is always a worry as not the easiest thing to change after it's fully rebuilt 😰

Oh blooming eck!!!!
I was hoping they were all like that!!!
There are 2 or 3 other cogs with the same marks and the bikes only done approx 13,000 miles.
I’ll keep an eye out for a used gearbox but the only ones I’ve seen look in worse condition than mine.
Cheers for all your advice
Jim 👍
