Hi Everyone, I need your opinions on my gear shaft. I'm getting close to re-building the engine and need to know if the gear shaft is sh***ed. Is the discolouring on the shaft of any concern. There are also 1 or 2 pitted areas on the teeth. Would you re-use or replace. Place your votes. I did take it to a local mechanic and he said it looked ok but if the pitting had gone any further across the teeth it would need replacing. Id really appreciate a 2nd opinion before I install it. I dont want to be gritting my teeth every time I put it in 1st gear!! IMHO I would look to replace the shaft. Whats the mating gear like?

It's difficult to judge witness marks in a picture. The top picture doesent look too bad but the bottom one says change me. Chrisg is right what does the driven first gear look like?

Thanks for your responses. 👍
From what I can remember the driven first gear looks fine. I’ll dig it out and have a look in the morning.
I’ve been struggling to locate a replacement shaft if needed so I think I’d have to go the banshee route with matching gear if it needs replacing!

I'm not sure how deep the case hardening goes. You can get a decent gearbox for £100 and bearing in mind the damage a displaced gear tooth or the delamination of the gear its probably better to change, now you know about it.

Cheers guys
Where’s the best place to look for used gearbox parts. I’ve tried fleabay but all I can find are new banshee parts. I’d have to buy the 1st gear wheel to go with the new banshee shaft. Most adverts are overseas so I’d have the import tax to add to the cost as well!!! It’s a RD350R ypvs 4CE (1995).
Thanks
Jim 👍

The shaft gear will be worse due to it being smaller
Will wear 3 times faster than the driven gear
I'm thinking about the banshee route just to get the taller first gear
I'd have thought you would get a good used one easy as most clusters wear out 5th and 6th so the complete clusters are changed
I'm sure I have one set somewhere with pitted 6th
As said it is difficult to tell from a picture as the polishing effects can make it look like wear
First is the least used and least stressed gear. If still smooth and quiet when spun with the driven gear I wouldn't worry

Thanks Steve,
If you did have a useable set somewhere I’d be very interested 👍
Cheers

Thanks Steve, If you did have a useable set somewhere I’d be very interested 👍 Cheers Jim Hi Jim I have a set of clusters but 2nd and 6th are pitted I haven't checked what the 1st gear on the input shaft is like but I suspect it won't be good considering the state of the others I was considering swapping the input shaft for a banshee one and buying a banshee driven first gear Not sure if you need to do the next bit but I was also going to fit banshee 6th gears as well The first gear is wider so don't know if you need 6th as well as it is narrower to keep the width the same. Curre toy got them sitting in my basket at about £160 plus post from USA Steve

No probs Steve. I think I’ll have to go banshee route as well.
6th gear as well, oh blooming heck 💰
Which site are you looking at if you don’t mind me asking 👍
