Hi Guys
I am going to view a bike on Monday.
It is a 250 LC and I am looking for tips on what to ask / look for please?
It has been rebuilt and is not matching numbers.
Thanks in advance.

All the usual things like tyre choice and condition, signs of pitting on fork swept area. Does it start and tick over easily. Look for leaks of any fluid. Yes it’s a 2 stroke but should sound sweet, especially the 250. Not rattly. Make sure the brakes don’t bind and the shock has some damping in.

Probably lots of things. I assume you are familiar with buying bikes so know what to look for generally re condition and running etc. Just a few to add to your list If was originally an import check that the exhausts and carbs are not stamped with 4L2 prefix as they are restricted versions and difficult to de-restrict. Most people swap them for 4L1 carbs and 4L0 exhausts, but can be an expense.
Any history/receipts etc supporting the rebuild is useful. Has it got all the difficult to find expensive parts such as centre stand, coil cover, tool tray, uncut rear sub-frame, uncut rear mudguard etc.
Look out for damage on LH crank case as they often threw a chain and broke these.
Make sure engine and VIN properly stamped, as many rogue ones about. Engine is stamped over some vertical stripes on LH crankcase side. VIN is stamped on RH side of headstock, if Euro bike will also have a VIN plate on front of headstock.
Check that frame is straight. Its not uncommon to see the front wheel too close to the radiator. Look at some pics of bikes before you buy to check that looks about right.
Test ride it to check everything is ok. Also check it pulls through the revs and doesn't really bog down 4500-5500 rpm. Does 1 key fit all the 3 locks.
I'm sure I and others will think of others to add to your list!
Good luck with it, you will not regret buying an LC.

Make sure that its as complete as possible . Its always the expensive and or hard to find bits that are missing .

Ask to see all the receipts for the work done on the engine and parts used and ask who did it. Make sure crank seals used in the rebuild are genuine Yamaha as pattern ones can fail quite quickly resulting in an expensive rebuild. I always take a spark plug out and check the colour. Other than that, as above, If the seller can't give you a straight answer to your questions, walk away.

If they use the following I know what I have Yea yam bits Patina mate They were all like that Walk away having kissed them in the glasgea way Seriously receipts and lots of them, are they happy for it to be inspected hence why I ask location, green passivate is just that it look like a metallic zinc plating not paint Missing bits are a bargaining tool and remember if it don’t feel right walk away something will come up don’t get buyers remorse. Follow what Shaun says as well, and it should run and Rev easily.

I would check by the VIN on the engine and on the chassis to know the year and if it comes from Germany (4L2 restricted model to 27hp), check all VIN here on my website: rd350lc.net/pageVIN250.htmHere a page for the VIN showing restamped: rd350lc.net/pageVINplate.htmCheck pipes and cars as well, to see if they are 4L2 too Xavier

I concur with the lads. Also I'd check underneath the fuel tank. Is it nice and smooth or has it been filled with plod or welded up? If it feels damp smell to see if it's petrol. I've been caught out on this one before...

It's easy to suss the seller out
Just walk straight up to him, cup his balls and ask if the bike is legit
If he says nothing about the cupping and says it's the best, most perfect LC that was ever built then he's lying and would do/say anything to con you into buying a heap
If he punches you then shows you a bag of receipts then buy it
🤣

A lot of good advice above. Maybe summarise like this : You need to evaluate how it differs from a refurbished full factory spec bike. If you can do that you will a) know exactly what’s on offer b) what it’s worth (by costing the reinstatement....not that you have to actually do that) So you need to be thinking about bit in terms of what you can see and what you cannot see. You need paperwork or functional eveidence for the things you can’t see and a visual check list for the things you could see.
Don’t be shy of arriving with some notes and a physical check list. If you can find an LC ‘nut’ who would come with you....all the better.

You could also take some pics and post on here if you don’t decide straight away it isn’t as good as having a knowledgeable mate but we would be able to assist. As Pete says if you had someone who knew them it takes some of the guess work out. I’d also want to know are they active members of the Lc club? On here? Do they know the bikes or are they just after a quick turnaround?

Make sure it comes with a centre stand. You don't want to be buying one of those at the current prices.

On a good day £400, on a bad day £600-£700 for NOS I think we have been saved from this nonsense as some guy is making new ones for £175 now.

That's good news. I remember around the New Year there was a thread on here with people guessing how much a NOS stand was going to end up going for.

Dont think it's been mentioned, but ask what size the cylinder bore is? Pistons are available past 2mm o/a, but the liner wall is getting very thin.

Give it a good look over. Multiple owners may also mean multiple crashes, not all rebuilds start at the motoliner jig...weirdly.... Just look for it looking a bit wonky at the back end i.e. things just not lining up... may be an indication of poss probs elsewhere.
