How badly does it effect the handling? has anyone got experience of fitting a larger tyre ( thinking ypvs sizes? )

If you fit oversize tyres they look like a giant black donut, and have no actual benefit.

Standard sizes work best. Both bridgestones and Avon RoadRiders perform equally in my opinion however I think the Avon is a prettier tyre. I’m not anti-Bridgestone either all my diesels have them

From some professional reviews, the Bridgestones were slightly better for grip and the Avons were slightly harder and lasted a little longer. I don't do millions of miles and want the best grip, so went with Bridgestones. Never had them slip even on track days.

I think most modern tyres will out perform the original tyres we had "yester year". With all the R and D done on these bikes I think Mr Yamaha probably got the sizes correct, so no need to over-size. JMO.

I've had the Bridgestone BT45'5 get too hot and start to slide playing with the tyre pressure didn't really help. It was a warm day. Most of the time they are better than my skills.

Either go on a diet or slow down I'm sure you aware that handling is a complicated subject and its not just down to tyres.

Also without inner tubes fitted to help the tyres run cooler. I forgot to say only on the track in Cartegena and Mettet.

i had a 120(in new money) avon on the rear of mine, handled a bit strange, felt like the rear was falling into the corner, so tried one size down and it feels better now, tho the fatter tyre looked nicer but just didnt feel right.

I`ve started subjecting the 4L0 to Curborough Twisty Sprint.
So far my fastest time is 43 seconds.
The tyres have no time to warm up, I`ve got some spare wheels so want something really sticky, mileage not important !
43 seconds was set on newish BT46`s running 26 psi front and rear, and involved a small slide from the rear, so although some room to improve technique, more grip would be nice.
EBay Avon AM22 at £418 pair are a bit (lot) over my budget.
Any other recommendations and suppliers ?

There was a dunlop combo which some used to run when I raced my 250. I had part worn 22/23s but tbh I think that was a mistake as the chatter was awful and they were oversize. The Dunlops were closer to stock size, race only compound, and the race winners used them from cold (barring the warm up lap). I'll see if I can dig out my old notes of you like.

Heidenau K65 might be worth a try. It's the best tyre I've used up to now. They come in two different compounds.

What sort of mileage are you guys getting from your tyres?, I've had 2 sets of BT45's on my 350LC and got about 7,000km, or about 4,500 miles out of them, well the back one, the fronts still had a bit of life left in them but I always replaced them as a pair, last weekend I had a set of Roadriders MK2 fitted so I'll see how they go, I just use the standard sizes and run the front at 32 and the rear at 36 psi, the Avon's are hard to get here in Oz though, took 2 months to get them where I could have got the new BT46's straight away
Cheers Steve
