Love air cooled dukes, owned lots and still have my sport classic. Only monster I’ve had was a 1200, real animal. You’re a lucky man mouse your monster looks lovely and such a classic.

Cheers Tobyjugs and Veg!
Yes, it's a 1996 900, so first gen, owned from new by me, never seen rain hence less than 10k mileage!
I love it, yes it does handle well, the faster you go the better it is. I have all the standard parts, but she is running with a full termignoni system and airbox mod and yet the performance is very similar to my Blk hybrid LC!
I think this is the nicest Monster apart from the current 1200S, which i really like!

Nice looking bike, I haven't ridden a Monster, but I have ridden a 1996 900SS, I really didn't get on with it, both the engine and the handling, I'd quite like to try a 600 Monster though as I think most of what I didn't like was caused by two big pistons going up and down.

My mates is also 1st generation. He has had two broken cylinder head studs, apart from that its been very reliable.

Early 900’s had a problem with base studs going, had a 900ss mk1, multistrada 1000 s ( probably the best all round bike I’ve ever owned, full adjustable ohlins front rear, full termi system etc etc ugly as a pig) 1200s monster sold it as I was doing 100 + everywhere on it just encourages you to hoon it, 851 loved it and my present sport classic 1000 special ( miss the dry clutch on it though). The air cooled belt motors for me are just unique plenty fast enough, light and bags of character. Always remember the original monster being launched it saved Ducati and has always been a regret that I never had one. Lovely lovely bike 👍

Well, i guess i've been lucky, just a couple of small probs along the way. Yes, quite agree on the character side Veg, still fancy a 1200 though! Used to have a 888 strada as well (same frame), but i 'highsided' it. Smashed it to bits, was not allowed to be rebuilt at all, great shame as i much preferred it to the 916/748 of the time, oh well IMG_1267 Cheers Mouse

Thats a beauty for sure. I have had a very soft spot for Italian bikes since my first Guzzi T3 in ,78. I,ve not owned a Monster although 900,s from the 70,s but who knows what might come my way and your words and those of our other contributors sure whet the appetite. For now the Italian section of the garage has a Guzzi Griso 1100 waiting for the weather to improve before she (Sofia) pokes her jugs out.

What a cracking bike Mouse! I've always liked Ducatis, especially the Monster. I know it was a parts bin bike but wow, they did a damn good job on it. Yours looks superb with that exhaust!

Alex Thanks Alex, got the pipe work second hand but in mint condition. It is 'straight through' system, so quite loud! Mouse

Hi Tobyjugs
that looks lovely, but isn't that an S2r, single sided swingarm and slightly different frame, wheels but still 900 engine.
I see he has rearsets, i would love some for mine (bit of a problem with ground clearance!) but nobody makes them any more, the problem is the current footrest also support the exhaust so the rearsets would have to do the same.
I think the later S4r had a water cooled 916 engine, so i think the S2r was the last 900.

Yes it's clearly not the same chassis as yours now that you mention it. I will have to ask him i always thought it was one of the first ones. The swing arm was changed when he decided to tidy it up as he was always complaining about try to get a special sump so you could fit the swing arm. The engine is also very different on the inside but don't know much about the spec.
It's great for setting off car alarms.

Yep S2-S2r air cooled 1000 S4-S4r 916 then 996 motors That was the pinnacle of the first versions before they went to the 1100 air cooled then 1200 water cooled. Looks really nice Tony I know the old car alarm trick both my 900ss and 851 would do that.

The monster from my mate is from 1995. That must make it also gen 1. I have to ask him about the frame as it's different to yours.
