Hi everyone,
I’m just about to start dismantling my brake callipers on a RD350R (1995).
I’ve watched a load of videos and searched for info on here. A lot of the advice covers single piston callipers but mine are obviously twin piston.
I presume I’ve got to split the caliper in two, against mr Haines advice 😀 in order to remove both pistons.
After the caliper is in two I presume I need to seal the brake fluid transfer port somehow so that I can build pressure to remove the piston using the grease/air/brake fluid method?
Also can anyone recommend where I can get the seal that goes between the two caliper halves. I was gonna get the pistons and seals from Norbo but I can’t find the seal between the caliper halves anywhere!!
Thanks for helping a newb!
Jim

This is how I do opposed piston callipers be it 2 or 4 piston. Leave calliper attached to master cylinder but unbolted from the bike. Pump lever watching which ones move easily. Use g clamps to stop the easy one so the other one comes out to match the others. You can put the pads in if they’re coming out equally. Then 1 pad as they get further out until you can then remove the pad and use a shim? until both pistons are virtually touching. They then will come out easily when you split the calliper. I have no experience on your callipers but the principle is the same?

Excellent. Thanks for the advice guys. That’s a great help.
Has anyone got any experience of using the pistons or seals from powerhouse?
That’s the only place I’ve seen the small seal for the caliper halves being sold!
Cheers Jim 👍

As beardy says, I wedge a bar or large screwdriver across the middle as one piston can pop out a lot easier than the other, and will fall out if over half way, then you have to try and replace it which become a big faff

Whats wrong with OEM seal (and piston) kits? decent value on ebay as well. I usually buy mine in the uk that way. not often something is good value in the uk for our bikes, but ive found brake kits very easily and cheaply.

You might find .. As I have... that the seals betwixt the the caliper castings. IF carefully removed (undamaged ) and let to sit for a week or so... reform back to original shape and apparent condition. All mine have have proven 100% reusable... reliably.

Ive found the opposite to bare with the half seals, they generally are trashed on calipers here. Kawasaki parts fit the later calipers tho and places like powerhouse and yambits sell the ones that fit the sumi's

Yep that’s what I did with mine as well , I didn’t get it quite right as one was still stuck in but managed in the end to get it out 👍

Absolutely No idea why though. I assumed they were all like that. Apparently not... aren't you the lucky one then :-).
