Please could anyone tell me what symptoms you get if the right crankcase seal is leaking , I’ve replaced them with pattern ones and put them in as per Haynes manual which I understand is incorrect

If it’s the right hand one if will be a bit smoky and use some gearbox oil, plug might be a bit oily as well. Yeah mr Haynes got it the wrong way round should be castlations to the bearing to aid lubrication. No easy fix - cases split and genuine seal

You are not the first and probably also not the last with the casle-mistery Not sure the direction makes all that difference. Do a leaktest. If there are problems you will find it out that way. See this thread for the castle discussion. rdlccrazy.proboards.com/thread/19185/crankcase-oil-seals

Last week I had to change the thermostat on my vw t4 and used the Haynes manual. After topping up the coolant the manual showed a picture with an arrow pointing to the bleed screw at the top of the engine bay. I thought that don’t look right and got my mechanic son to have a look too. It was the clutch bleed nipple. I then looked at the bleeding the clutch section and there was the same picture 🤷♂️ I still always buy a Haines manual though.

As well as the gear oil level dropping, you may be able to smell petrol in the clutch case if you remove the threaded filler cap. Castellations towards the bearing, always. Seals - pattern can be very iffy, with some failing with less than 1000 miles on them. Genuine Yamaha only with these, in my opinion.

Yes needs to be made a "sticky" to only use genuine Yam seals for the crank

I thought that too Jess. Although some of the copies are very good nowadays, even own to the bags they come in. It does look "pinched" though. Be interested to know the brand and supplier of that crank seal ?

If you got it from Fowler’s then it’s genuine, can’t see how the damage occurred though, you must of damaged it installing it, hard to do though.

Yep, if Fowlers then genuine Yam. It looks like physical damage, as opposed to material failure, but as Jess says, hard to do ? Dusty
