I'd go for Saxilby, as it has a train station on the Sheffield line. I live in Skellingthorpe.

I used to reckon an hours travel to and an hours travel home was acceptable back in the day, and anything over was a digs job. Have travelled longer as in 2 hrs each way... but its a knacker on ten hour shifts. Trouble is an hour by car is no distance at all nowadays on our congested roads and motorways are always closing... unlike the old days when they never shut. M6 next to me is closed regular as clockwork.

Everything is subjective. I lived in North Hykeham for 15 years. Great for commuting (close to A46 and has a station) but for me the south of the city is getting more and more congested and over developed. I moved north of the City and personally find it much less busy with some lovely villages (Nettleham, Welton, Sudbrooke, Scothern etc) but much worse for a daily commute to Sheffield.

I think we need more of a clue what you're looking for.
Saxilby is a nice village, train station, chippy, co-op, the Anglers is a good pub. Ivan runs a bike club come drop in chat in his garage once a week, there's even a questionable Chinese take away. There's a little bike repair place just down the road with a dyno etc. Plenty of walking/cycling if that's your thing, with the canal/river/navigation running through it.
If that's not what you're after, given it's as good as it gets for commuting to Sheff, either by car down the A57 and the cursed toll bridge or by train, then we need more clues.
Nettleham is lovely, with a great pub / restaurant, but you're adding another 15-30 mins to get anywhere.

Look online at equestrian/farm houses for sale some specialty agents and quite often cheap as or cheaper than a new build box.

Much as the farm/ horse option would give more room and out buildings, im now in my 50’s with kids and don’t really want to renovate any more properties, so a new build or recently built house would be preferred as long as it has a double garage 👍
