As title i have access to a 10t hydraulic bench press . I have removed the outer webs with no drama . I have made a rig to hold the center webs and a friend has made a mandrel to us on the center spline. I have had the press up to 8t and there is no movement . Has any one here got one apart using some other method . I have seen an old post on the air cooled forum with photos of the tools from the Yamaha workshop . I need to get it apart to have the lab seal machined for an o ring . The crank center is going to be used for a big bore Ypvs engine.

Hi dusty , yes i had a look at your thread a few weeks ago to see the crank center set up . From the size of the press ram that looks like a 50t minimum . I may have the use of a 20t press in the new year if still no good i will buy a lab seal get a groove machined and send it off with the new parts and get it pulled/rebuilt. 50t press eh i may get one before i retire to play about with stuff like this .

It is a 50T press, what you can try is this. I take it you have a finger plate and the crank web on it and then pushing on the center shaft ? make sure you are pushing on the center shaft, with the splines you need a smaller pusher than you think, dont quote me but like 12mm od So load up to as much as you can with your press and then hit the crank web with a copper mallet, the shock may just bounce the center apart. let me know how you get on

Any way i am going to get it back on the press in the morning. I have a 14mm mandrel for the center spline . I have been heating the center up and feeding it with oil .

With a 14mm pin i am sure this is too big and you are going to be pushing on part of the web and not the center shaft.
Heat i would avoid as it can damage the crank webs, oil will not help as the splines are locked in by a slight taper

Hmmm, this job has turned out to be full of all sorts of good news . Thanks for the heads up about the mandrel . Wish i had never started , mind you the crank has been in my shed for some years and thought i would bring some of it back too life instead of chucking it into a scrap metal skip .

Well it’s been a good read and learning curve for me. And an interesting experience for you. So I’m glad your having a go. Good luck 🤞🏻

Well i didn't get to the press Monday but got there Tuesday instead . Of course the weather has turned not nice with cold weather and a bit of snow chucked in to be melted by the rain . Got the stuff set up and i used a piece of steel bar which i have had in the tool box for about 20years as a mandrel for the center shaft . I wrapped my coat round the press and got a bit of pressure on the job . It felt like it had gone a bit until i had a look and the bar had bent . So i reset the job and used the mandrel my friend made me after checking the diameter was ok and there it went . So now i can get the lab seal machined for an o ring groove and have a mod done on the r/h/o main bearing . Nice .

Why are you using + 5 rods for ?

I have had this worm going round in my head for some years now about building a big bore engine for this , ,472cc what could possibly go wrong . Oh as an aside i measured the center spline with the vernier and it was just over 19mm diameter so the mandrel will definitely out live me .

Ok I think reading between the lines, you are trying to build a bigger CC engine ?
So I can assume that you are fitting 5mm longer rods to do this ??

Yes going down the mono block road i believe the pistons are 72mm .
