This seems to affect all electrical circuits, where the negative wiring circuit corrodes and the wires oxidise which increases resistance.
I need to tackle this issue, I cannot find out if its just the connectors which are affected or if its potentially the full run of negative wire?
Does it all have to be stripped or a replacement with new wiring and connectors?

I've never went far enough back to say it's all the way but have seen them blackened which doesn't make a good connection and is a bugger to solder
Not sure if it is heat related or maybe sacrificial protection

OLD theory surprised to see it dragged out. Yamaha Scrimped on the costs of fitting adequate Ground circuits ( Black wires ) in their Moto looms. For Years! Consequently most all old looms have semi or even fully melted black wires .. deep inside the bundles. Klever to unwrap the looms and have a look .. then repair. Also important to add extra ground wires .. Motor to Frame, Battery Negative to frame is IMO mandatory.

The solder just wouldn’t take. Then I tried some plumbers flux used for soldering copper pipes and it worked on the wires.

Silver solder can sometimes work too.

old solder with real lead in it was better too than the modern stuff on corroded wires.

Thanks all, I will have to investigate a bit more, I suspect my loom is suffering from this, I just cannot get "everything" to work together. When I charge up the battery in install and turn the lights on, headlight and taillights come on, then when I press the brakelight the taillight goes out and wont come back on until I charge up the battery fully again? Indicators work normal, clocks illuminated as normal, brake lights only work when the other lights are off (after the above scenario) Im totally stumped ive gone through the wiring umpteen times and cannot see anything until I came across the NEGATIVE WIRE CORROSION! Happened across this tutorial on cleaning the wires but its only for the ends or connections. www.apriliaforum.com/forums/showthread.php?277269-How-to-clean-copper-wires-that-have-corroded-blackthanks again for the replies

Are you sure that the battery is an healthy one to start with? Yeah, wiring may still be a root problem here but I'd test with a battery in tip top condition just to be sure.
I fitted a digital volt meter to my LC, swapping tail/brake light bulb for an LED one sure makes a difference, voltage hardly drops at all.

Good idea about adding extra wires thanks for the heads up I’m in the process of completely rebuilding my 31k I’ll do that the loom and connectors look in good condition but a couple of wires have been soldered together I wonder if someone has had problems with the earthing in the past

I hadn’t thought of using LED bulbs to replace the standard ones I’ll try that , is it a direct swap ?

I have a powerdynamo ignition so have to use lead acid.

6 years may well be close to it's end, batteries don't seem to last nowadays. I bought a lead acid JMT branded one, that didn't hold it's charge/last long at all, a few months later I got a sealed one, happened to be the same brand, so far so good.

6 years! yeah... sadly thats a very good life for a battery. Its time for a new one I would think.

thanks lads, i have a motobatt SLA unit ordered, I also have some new wire ready to replace the old negatove stuff, I hope to reuse the old connectors after a good clean!
