Whats the petal thickness? Someone mentioned that was one of the differences between them and the real deal.
The dont look too bad, has to be said.

Yeah my chinese copy has 0.6mm thickness and original 0.4. That is a huge difference. The petal becomes much stiffer.

We could do with a list of ALL the differences in case someone is had over. I really can’t understand how they get away with the labelling made by Mototassinari on the reeds and box? Jon

I’ve fitted some to an engine which I’m not too bothered about to see how they perform/last, they work ok engine pulls very well, as for longevity who knows, mine were the cheap unbranded ones about £20 pair, I’ve done 1000 miles or so, I wouldn’t risk them on a new engine. Jess

The petals crack and splinter very quickly but the blocks themselves seem ok as long as they can take the heat and are fuel resistant.

They get away with it coz they simply don't care, and have the attitude of "what are you gonna do about it " Dusty

How do you change the reeds in the vf4. They seemed to be melted or 2k glued in?

Hey,
Did anyone actually see these chinese copies fail? Lots of talk about them being poor quality but not many people who actually comment on them. (I did read TSA's comment)
I've ordered 2 pairs of them just to check them out.. If they look all right I guess I'll give them a go. Perhaps they'll be less dangerous than my old original reeds - that may have been used since the 80's for all I know.

Thats an interesting question, tho back in the day people suggested that the OEM steels failed, I never had one break. Maybe that only happened to racers? I bent up my reed stops and even removed them, still never broke one or had it go through the engine... and Ive never bought a bike with broken OEM reeds, or one stuck in the crank/piston/head etc

Back in the day , never saw a steel reed failure even on Tz750 IOM outfit applications....and that’s a serious WOT workload workout.. Head studs/bolts breaking, all the time. Expansion pipes cracking...often Can’t say it won’t happen but if used as per Yamaha spec...so talk of steel reed failure is not aligned to reality. As for the effects of time, corrosion is about the only thing to look for. Otherwise I have no concern about using 40 year old steel reeds.
Regarding VForce copies, I doubt the copiers really understand the structural demands and requirements of the composite laminate, and from observation looks like regular FR4 grade material. In addition use in a Banshee is quite different to a road/track bike. So there’s probably a difference but to me even that’s not the big topic...trademark and design right violation is where the debate should be.

My experience is the same as reedpete and I have never suffered a steel reed failure on road or race bikes, the issue with composite reeds in my experience is the breakdown of the resin and suspect it will become more of an issue with the increased level of ethanol. I have not had a complete reed failure with carbon as on my race bikes they where checked regularly but have seen them deteriorate around the outer edges. The copies re worth a try as long as you monitor the condition .

Not my bike but club member. Made a temporary reed from an old milk bottle. Got him from Stirling services to Oban, said he couldn't feel any difference. Never found the broken piece😮

Well there ya go. Not quite as common as the scare mongering advice from back in the day, but it can happen.

By the looks of it that ex reed has a story to tell.... The reed stop marks aren’t normal and the surface seems quite pitted , but that might just be dirt..

Had a Harpowa one lose a small chunk on a production 350 31K. I was swapping them back to standard as a precaution as we were off on a 2000 mile round trip to Spain. I never noticed anything wrong before I found it.
The bike had previously done almost four seasons on the same reeds so not too bad. Never seen or heard of a steel reed going. A carbon or plastic one would just get eaten and spat out I suppose. No harm done. A steel one on the other hand........
Have to agree about the 400 reed above. Looks to have had a hard life.

Today I have been making a good set of standard reed blocks up so I can do a fair test against some new design reed blocks for a 4LO engine. Whilst sifting through all the bits I have, I thought it might be a bit of handy information for you lads to read about the thickness of different reeds.
The standard metal reeds are 0.20 mm thick.
The Yamaha fiber reeds Norbo sell are 0.40 mm thick (This was a surprise). I use these in my modified reed blocks. I have some single blade fibres in reed blocks supplied by Bob Farnham. These used to be my favourites. These petals are 0.60mm.
I have various other reeds all made from material that looks like different types of carbon fiber. They are all 0.60 mm.
I know the thickness is not the whole story in reed design but i thought it might be handy to post.

My set of genuine Moto Tassinari V4 reed blocks arrived in the post today, the manufacturer’s website states-
Yamaha RD250, 350 & 400 owners please note: Installing these reed valves will require modification of the intake port of the cylinders. While the bolt pattern is the same, the valve will not just slide in. Material removal on the intake port walls will be required. If you do not have the ability to carry out the modifications please do not purchase the valves.
Before I whip the carbs off, has anyone fitted these and had to perform the above or should we assume this is only applicable to air-cooled RD’s?

The v4’s don’t just slide in on the 250/350lc you need to grind the walls away, be careful as they get thin.
It’s not just a case of whipping the carbs off unfortunately- top end strip
