and on to sprockets, I have a 17T front sprocket and need to sort a rear, im thinking 40T but not 100% sure.
Im running 17" wheels

Depends on what top speed you want to gear for, but to compensate for 18 to 17 rim you need to drop rear sprocket according. Theoretically is the contact patch to spindle radius change but if you approximate to 1/20 Ie a Approximately couple of teeth less on the back you should be fine.

thanks pete, ok ill do a few calculations and make the best informed decision i can.
dont care about top speed, would like a standard'ish gearing setup if that makes sense

i remember working this out before when i fitted the rear tyre. I have on a 120/80 17 which gives me approximately the same diameter wheel/trye as the original 3.25 x 18 wheel/tyre.
taking the original sprocket sizes to be 16f/36r the ratio would be 2.25.
I have a 17 front already and fitting a 38rear would give me a ratio of 2.24
