hi, my early 3504l0 developed a fuel leak from the overflow on the carb after replacing the fuel tap, i adjusted the tab on the floats to reduce the fuel level which cured the problem, but im a bit concerned that it may be running lean now, i have an egt fitted and its going into the red. would i be best to use some clear tube on the drain on the bottom of the carb and check the level that way, thanks in advance.

Two ways to measure the float height other than watching fuel pi55 out of the overflow that is...
1. Measure it off the bike with the float just touching the needle valve (not depressing it and not with a gap). Measure to the gasket face to furthest point of the float away. I tent to tilt the carb to 70 degrees ish to get it steady and not under compression on the needle valve itself.
2. This is a back up test once I've done the above and am happy with the measurements. Get a length of clear hose connected to the overflow and hold it vertically along side the float bowl. Fill the chamber so that the needle valve then shuts off supply and check the height in the tube in relation to the overflow tube.
Make sure your float isn't leaking too as that will screw up all of the above!

Always good to turn off the Tap too every time you shut the motor down.

I don't really see how the fuel tap changing created the leak assuming the carbs were getting fuel before..

the previous tap was a bit slow delivery and the new one pours fuel out much quicker so thats what i presumed caused the issue, i did check for any crap in the valve when i adjusted it and it was clean.

Shouldn't do but a slow feed tap could cause running issues if the carb bowl can't keep up with the engine revs. My 500 has a prime position which bypasses the vacuum feed. This is fed by two c.8mm ID pipes that throw fuel out like it's being poured from a bucket. All 4 needle valves manage OK..
