Good luck with your search, not a good time to be looking for a job.
So few jobs, too many applicants.

This wasnโt Stella induces was it? ๐ Sometimes you have to make a stand youโre a long time dead. I left the old bill before pensionable age everyone said I was mad I didnโt have a job wife supported me (job was making me ill) I havenโt looked back Iโm self employed have a few decent contracts regular work more money far less stress and the boss is a decent bloke ๐

No veg mate I wish it was lol no,, was working in a main dealership, one off 6 he has in northwest so after three months of furlough he decides to close the branch I was at,, fair comment due to virus ect so he moves three of us 30 miles down the road so I moved all my tools down and travelled to and from, now when he said to move I asked about fuel arrangements yeah yeah ile sort something, which never appeared, so few weeks back I gets pulled in to the office with wots going on anth you don't seam happy to wich I say yeah well I'm spending ยฃ200out of my wage for fuel a month too and fro and I'm a bit pissed off,, oh so it's not the work?? Eh???, so he says Hele have a word with the boss so I leave it at that,, coz he obviously never did, as nothing sorted, until this morning he comes over I need a word,, bearing in mind I did say to the Mrs the last chat let's say,, that's a set up I can feel it just watch,, fair enough this morning pick pick you missed this ect you didn't secure the cover on the time belt you did yesterday?? I know I did,, blah blah,,, so I say look ile put a week's notice in he say no go now,, so I did...arranged a van pick my boxes up tomorrow f**k em,,, everything happens for a reason mate so for the best no doubt,, but if I'd been on the Stella would've gone slightly different I'm sure lol but I'm wiser than to play there games mate,, bad time though to look ,,, but we shall see should go self employed but that's another huge step cheers tho for the thought guys ๐๐๐๐

This isnโt meant to be patronising but the biggest step to self employment generally is in your head. Ask any of the guys on here that are. If you can afford to be supported for a while as it wonโt happen over night but normally within 6 months youโll know whether itโs working. However trained mechanics are in demand. Good luck with whatever you chose to do. ๐

Definitely not being negative re going alone as a mobile mechanic. But a mate of mine does suffer with the weather in the winter time. Just something to hear in mind. Good luck though. ๐๐ป

I was a time served mechanic and Iโd had enough I went on the electric utilities, but at every job there is a tosser some are better to deal with than others it is more pc nowadays but it was always sorted out other ways before , it only takes constant nick picking to slowly make the piss boil then itโs shove your job it doesnโt need be like that they possibly wanted to push you out as well that is another aspect so the time is right for you and itโs better to regret something you have done than regret if not doing it at all

Some managers are tw4ts! What comes around, goes around. My old manager went out of his way to not help me when I was diagnosed with a disability. 6 months later he got made redundant! Serves the fat forker right! Let's hope that car dealership goes bust and soon after your old boss will be on "Can't pay, we'll take it away" :-)

Feck the tossers ๐
Is their not local garage you can work out of
There is a place local to me that rents out ramps
Guy owns a taxi fleet and the garage services them
The ramp is paid by doing so much of his work. The rest of the time you bring in whatever work you like for yourself

What about going mobile? No premises on peoples drive ways at least to start building your brand? Tools in a van etc. My first thought. Iโm sure there must be some start up grant. Thereโs a mobile mechanic Iโve used and heโs always busy.

Cheers guys,, good advice so looking into it,, grants ect,,, not one verbal or written warning ever in my life and none from my last employer,,, the boss always said hi chatty ect,, totally set up on managers side I believe, but then he must've had the owners say in it,,, more faces than a rubic cube,, I hate two faced people and plenty there I tell ya,,, I could tell you some stories for example servicing dealer cars with none genuine parts,,, and charging ยฃ297 for oil and filter change only,, with parts from npa or euros. No no no no,,, best off away it beggars belief how they get away with it,, I don't work like that,

i know a few lads who work at the local Honda dealership, out of the blue they get dragged into the office and told the bodyshop is shutting and moving to Blackpool (25 miles away) so either work there or leave.....
Lucky im out of the bodyshop game now after 20 years in it, good riddance

I'd find a business model on the lines of, just for arguments sake, a 250cc Honda V twin 2 Stroke
Owners are misty eyed mid life crisis 40+ somethings Owners don't know a lot Owners too busy to do it themselves Owners with too much money Owners more than happy to have their pants down just so they have "your workshop" on their invoice The vehicle in question is relatively easy to work on but you can use smoke and mirrors to hide the simplicity of your work and availability of parts
Set up fixing or rebuilding stuff and build a reputation based on self presentation (a bit like rate my builder where you get all your mates to say how great you are)
Just a thought ......

Working for yourself has its upsides, but also its downsides as well, one is that you rarely turn off and are always 'on call'. It wont save you from idiots, but it may save your sanity.
I think with cars the guys you want to target are the millenials who live at home and have too much cash. They seem to be the place where cash is no object. The other end of the scale is straight service work, in and out fast oil changes that you charge an hour for but take only 20mins etc. Do lots of them and get them to bring the cars to you so no down time. Service work used to keep the lights on, now it can be a huge money maker. Defo dont do long jobs for people with no money who will forget your estimate by the time the bill comes. Soul destroying dealing with them.
