If its for a 4L1 or 4L0 you have to remove the clock housing from the bike and strip out the speedo. You then need to open up the clock which is doable but quite tricky. Once inside you have to remove the needle, which is prone to breaking, and not replaceable, so be careful. You then remove the face and either put an overlay decal on it, or get a full face replacement from Simon Wells. this will ensure the speedo reads in mph, although the odometer will still click over in km's but not an issue.
Even more tricky if you want to change the internal gearing on the odometer to also click over in miles. There is a thread on here for this if you do a search.
You should also find some threads on mph overlay decals too.
I might have a speedo that has already had the overlay fitted if you don't want to open up your own speedo clock. If interested drop me a PM and I will have a look for you.
RD 350 LC - 1982 - bounty like my bike in the 80's, finally got an original UK one. 31K/Aprilia RS hybrid - ex Yogi and Muttsnuts bike - my first hybrid Triumph Street Triple R (sorry!) ...and a box of bits I hope to be able to turn into a 1983 31K
I'm doing one now. Heed the warning about the needle breaking although I not sure what options there are other than to try getting it off carefully. Mine broke leaving the plastic sleeve part on the spigot. It was so tight I think breaking it was unavoidable unless there is some special tool/puller to get round the spigot to pull it off which is what I will investigate when I do my tacho. Anyway I hope to glue it back together. Before you take it off, mark the position, I gently lifted it over the stop and let it settle in its natural resting place, then marked it on the rim.
Im led to believe by a couple of guys who've done this is that the decals dont work well with the lights. You should also sand/remove the old face or it can be seen through the decal. So Im going for some new dials rather than decals. The biggest problem is the needles!
