Alan, Its to fix the unit to the mechanism spindle. Without it the needle doesn't hold and works loose. You can get 'similar' needles without the brass centre and they are rubbish!
The spindle is 1.0mm diameter. Shaun.

Alan, it may just be the perspective on your drawing, but the orange needle is tapered. 2.6mm at the fat end near centre, 1.5mm at the thin end. Orange bit is 36mm long. Black bit is 12mm diameter. Dainty little thing.

Usually a new needle is made as a replacement so you will always have the brass insert
Just needs a hole for it, easy enough to bond it in If not an interference fit

Ok Found a (broken but glued) needle I see the orange part is hot staked onto the black part Do you think itโs worth seeing if we can just print the needle like in the picture of the model so to replace you just remove the orange needle and replace keeping the black centre part I will try to remove the needle later tonight

It would certainly be better than no needles at all ๐

Ok that works As Logan is working from home he wants to draw it up using his fusion 360 software and try first to print one in PLA to see what it looks like

I have a rev counter with no case, just the body.ย I found it the other day in a box of bits and gave it a clean up. I did consider getting one of your cases for it but I have no glass either although who know what I might dig up laterย Despite being in a box for 25+ years the needle is in tact. If the needles are the same you can borrow it. Steve, Be careful with that, only take the needle off if you absolutely need too. I have done dozens, and my hit rate is about 50% success. They either snap in half, or break away at the pivot shaft. Replacement needles are not available. Only option isย to buy another clock just for the needle, and don't cry if that one snaps when you remove it. I've cried a lot! I have done work on lots of other similar clocks of the era, and the original 4L0/4L1 needles are by far the worst to remove. Shaun. I wasn't thinking of trying to take the needle off myself. It doesn't seem like a good idea by the sound of it. The pin that works as a needle stop was bent. I put a piece of fine brass tube over if and straightened it. I thought there was a good chance of it breaking but it worked out fine. Just cleaned it up with break cleaner and compressed air and stuck it in a bag.

Looking great Alan. is this how you celebrate your birthday? Are you just printing the orange bit and re-using the original black centre? Hi Shaun Yes thinking of just doing the orange part and you keep the boss as it has the brass tube and that brass โweightโ and the assembly will then fit correctly and securely on the shaft If you are good a repairing clocks it should be easy enough to carefully swap the needle I know I have lots of irons in the fire so to speak at the mo (maybe too many๐๐) but will try to print a couple as its a quick print Stay safe all Al

I do find that sometimes they break at the boss where it is connected to the brass insert, sometimes you can re-glue this sometimes not, but the needle is a great spare to have in case the brittle needle snaps as it has a habit of doing. Great work.
