Any YSR500, oops, YSR50 love out there Picked up both these in San Francisco for a song, Boxes and boxes of spares, Both are running, Little flyers, Came with a bunch of nice goodies, Team Calamri wheels, triple and fork clamps, handle bars, fork spring conversion kit, exhaust, 24mm carb kit and fancy fuel cap and a few other bits.
I stripped the Red/White down during the week and sent all the metals out for powder coat, its a matching numbers bike, The other bike is going to my eldest son for a project, I swapped over the bits I needed and hes good to go.
Engine stripped down, I'm replace the main bearings and seals, the left seal was totaled, It passed a leak down test, but the seal splits when pressed, it was rock hard, glad I got in there, The cylinder is lightly ported, Might be a Calamari job, I sent the cylinder out for a rebore, Its in good shape, but the piston is a little worn, They are going to fit a Wiseco, The bead has been modded, squish was machined etc. Rekeyed the ignition and helmet lock, Both on a set of A-Keys and barrels I had in the key bin.
This is as far as I got, pics will follow as I go along

More progress, Wheels were stripped and the metal polished!! I dont like polished metal..... BUT, It is what it is....... Hubs sanded and repainted, Engine is back together, New crank bearings and all seals replaces, Waiting on the cylinder to come back from a rebore. New clutch plates and springs, gaskets etc, Stripped and painted the outer covers, They were pretty badly corroded, Look a lot better now Switches stripped and painted, waiting on the decals to finish them off, Lots of other bits and pieces completed, all wiring has been repaired, harness all cleaned up and re-taped. Waiting on the frame and all the metals to come back from the powdercoater.

Engine is complete, Carbon reeds fitted and I modded the cage, get more of a flow through it.I also fitted a new 24mm flatslide carb, A lot better than the stock 16mm carb!!! It was a PITA to get the OEM throttle cable to work with it, I want to keep the oil pump, No pre-mix... I drilled the carb and fitted an oil injector.. I removed the little cable end and cut back the outer cable, Got my length right and re-soldered on the end, Works perfect, nice to have an OEM cable, they just work that much smoother. The oil pump cable is held in with this snazzy little clip, Nice, havent seen one of these before I also drilled two little holes in the barrel fin right beside where the exhaust bolts to the cylinder. The OEM way is the shits, this way the springs will be good and solid. Still waiting on the frame and bits.....

More progress, We have a roller Easier to shove it in the corner now Switches are stripped and repainted and greased and new decals. Forks have new Yamaha Seals and dust covers, 15w Bel Ray fork oil, This has the Calamari fork conversion, These little bikes only came with one fork spring, Strange,,,,.... So Calamari do a kit, a spring and a machined spacer to fit in the bottom of the right fork to make up the length. The bottom of the frame and engine will never look this clean again, Its a lot easier to get the wheels in, chain, brake hub stay and engines bolts in when its upside down, Kinda like working on your bicycle All new Yamaha nuts and bolts fitted, Toomey exhaust with TZMike can, looks a lot nicer than the HUGE Toomey can. Wiring tomorrow and hopefully fire it up, Dropped all the bodywork off today to get her all painted up and pretty..... :smt023

And we have a runner, Lots of bits and pieces over the last few days, getting the brakes rebuilt, all new seals and pistons in the master cylinder and caliper, and then bled, Foot pegs all reassembled and rear brake hooked up, Wiring harness fitted and a few gremlins ironed out, couldn't get the lights to work, Bad wire in the block, cut and re-solder and all good, oil pump tank fitted and pump bled and set, battery box fitted and tail light fitted, I also made up a paddock stand, fired up the welder and some one inch GB, Works great Funny thing happened, So I gave it roughly 8-10 kicks and nothing happened, So I pulled the plug cap and got a new plug down and fitted it in the cap and then used the plug in the engine as the ground, I was kicking it over to see if it was sparking and it fired up, This is fackin priceless, the plug outside was sparking like crazy across the electrodes and the engine was running, I did not know an engine would fire up with it set like that, Now just waiting on the painter....

Ooohh that turned out nice, good choice on the indicators, never been a fan of them stuck in the seat unit, even if it does clean the rear end up.

Most countries have (had?*) a law about how close an indicator can be to the rear light hence some needed to have them set further apart. Aus is one of those places.
The ones in the bodywork I always thought were there to emulate the look of the 500s upper pipes.
* - many modern bikes have stop/tail and inds in one unit and pass muster, go figure.

Ooohh that turned out nice, good choice on the indicators, never been a fan of them stuck in the seat unit, even if it does clean the rear end up. They stick out a lot. But they are the stock ones for the USA. I know the jap and euro models got a nice little set.
