best way i can describe it is.....when lightly on throttle about 5k there is a whirring noise or like pistons running up a dry bore or dry bearings spinning Still goes ok. still smokes. Oil lines have oil. gearbox is full of gear oil. I have captured the noise kind of on my helmet cam

Is the water level ok? Had mtx that made a strange noise around them revs. Turned out the head was cracked. It was pressurising the cooling system and blew water out of the overflow pipe over 5 or 6 k. Engine still ran well and I wouldn't have known if it weren't for me mate riding behind who could see the jet of water.

Well it's highly unlikely to be the crank
Check the base nuts are tight as you can get some strange noises from them

I had a weird noise coming from the motor just last week Sounded like a shaft spinning in a dry bearing. A screeching type noise. I thought it was coming from either the crank or the alternator area. After a bit of worried searching it turned out to be the left side exhaust ( Mutts stainless PV pipes) sitting against the bolt for the centre stand. Loosened off the flange nuts, re positioned the pipe, tightened back up and noise was gone. Might be worth a look

Itβs hard to get a handle on anything, wants a mic/cam positioned down the side. Standing next to it on a rolling road would work.

Now that is strange
Sounds like something is loose
Either something resonating outside the engine or something wrong inside
Don't think I could ride it till I found it
Take it somewhere noise won't bother people, get it on the stand and try to get it to make the noise while finding where it's coming from
Hopefully something daft like the kickstart rattling ore a loose engine mount
If not I'm afraid it's a case of taking engine to bits starting at the outside parts like flywheel or clutch case off and check idler gear hasnt thrown a circlip or something

That's weird. Sounds like it's drawing or blowing air. Could it be something like plug or airbox or something like that on the brink of coming loose and blowing with pressure when u get to 5k? Or possibly a plug cracked and blowing. Heard of a cb900 that blew the porcelain part of the plug out leaving the thread etc in head. Just clutching at straws really coz not heard anything like that before. Hope it's something simple like above. Does it do it all the time? Or only after getting up to temp?

so far i have pulled a plug out. biscuit color on one side of the white bit. took flywheel cover off, not loose and no movement trying to lift crank up and down. The round disc in the clutch cover had fell off and was laying against the fairing but i had removed that and noise was still there. The kick start does wobble a bit, it was seized a while back so i cleaned and greased the pivot. I have stuck my finger in the gearbox hole and pushed cogs i can reach but no seemingly loose bits. I think the noise comes when clutch is released. I am going to check all exhaust/ barrel nuts are tight, then go for a small ride and check if it is the kick start but i dont think it is. I have got it booked in with RSK 2 strokes monday evening. The guys said they will have a listen for me.

Have you tried stethoscope or use screwdriver against cases / barrels the see if you can narrow down which side of engine it is coming from?

In the video it sounds like it does it when you dip the clutch and rev it. Does it do it when stationary? If it does, might be better to try and trace it before going for a ride, just in case.

checked all nuts and bolts. exhausts move a lot in their collars. kick start moves but doesn't rattle. Took the dip stick out and the clutch is noisy and when i pull the lever in the main noise stops and there is a tinny spinning noise, a cog i'm guessing. Here is a video. Starting with clutch disengaged then engaged, repeated a few times.

Never tried that before so don't know if it's normal or not. Stupid thought, but what is the disc on the clutch cover there for? Just wandering if it reduces clutch noise? I take it it is still removed?

Clutches can be noisy without being a problem
Idler gear is probably something to think about next oil change
Your clutch disc rating off the fairing is most likely been your problem if it is now gone
Hopefully happy days now π

to be fair the disc was off for the last part of the video, it was in my pocket. The only part i managed to tighten a tiny bit was the right hand exhaust stud, got about an 8th of a turn on it. the pipes do twist in their collars though. i'll go for a longer ride tomorrow see what happens. I will also get some new clutch plates, bush and idler. any recommendations on wether a standard idler or the one with the bearing in the center? thanks for all the suggestions
