I started by cutting the scrap away to a straighter edge then as I had another case with the same damage I cut some sections out of it and welded in with a gas soldering iron The idea is to get the heat at the point it easily melts the plastic but doesn't burn it You can use a bit of old case to melt blobs in to fill gaps You want to melt the plastic on both sides so once you get the plastic soft work it around to make sure it bonds both sides Here's where I have tacked a donor bit in then added some plastic and melted it in Not worried about looks just now, just want it structurally solid and I'll dress back a bit later

Luckily the cases are symmetrical so I cut a section out the other case

Then tacked it in to place

Then used the soldering iron and a bit of scrap case to bond it in

Plastic modelling cement And scrap plastic if you mix them together in an air tight container makes a brilliant adhesive and filling solution.

Wow!!!
Fantastic job. Did you use a bracket or anything as a jig to make sure the locating bolt is in correct place? Or go by eye?

My 1st thought was fill case with expanding foam, sit needle on top with a bit of string on the end with other end of string wrapped round throttle grip. Twist throttle and needle moves. Then this thread happened. How cool is that?

Wow!!! Fantastic job. Did you use a bracket or anything as a jig to make sure the locating bolt is in correct place? Or go by eye? No jig used I cut the donor section the way I did (bigger than required) as cutting right through the case where I did means the bolt is in the centre of the section and easy to identify as it's where the case shape changes so the guide line is already there Steve

It's threads like this that help keep so many of our bikes on the road when replacements are so astronomically priced. Thank you for taking the the time to do a detailed thread for us all.π€

Great work and thanks for sharing, I need to dig out my box of spare clock bits and see what crap I kept to see if I can repeat your magic trick.

Thank you for taking the time to put this up Steve. Brilliant. I would try something myself like this after reading and viewing your demo. Cheers Terry β

John I know youβre joking but for others, Iβm going to be a bit of a nerd you need to make sure you do not inhale the fumes from melting plastic they are seriously toxic. π

How would you go about repairing a broken/lost fixing tab?

How would you go about repairing a broken/lost fixing tab? Find a suitable bit of donor plastic from an old case or something and cut out a tab shape and drill the mount hole Make it full size, as in not just the broken off bit Then cut off the remaining bit of the tab by making a horizontal cut as if you are trying to remove the rest of the old tab then a vertical one down through the 2 little reinforcing bits on the tab to remove the remnants of the old tab This gives a much larger contact patch to bond the new tab on with instead of just the couple of mm thickness of the tab Wish I'd kept a pic of the tab I changed now Steve

Rather than using a soldering iron which is seriously bad for your health ( the fumes can and will damage your lungs and can kill you) if you buy some Tamiya extra thin cement like this www.amazon.co.uk/Tamiya-87038-Extra-Thin-Cement/dp/B000BMYWYCThat will glue the white cases far stronger than using a soldering iron. Too fill gaps you can melt spare plastic in the cement (decant it into something else) use the gloop to fill holes To make new supports or holes for the screws to fit into you could also use spare plastic sprue.

Hi all
If the cases are ABS then a trick the 3d printing guys use is to make up some ABS slurry by dissolving ABS in acetone to create a thick slurry mix and then use this like a glue
Here is a link on how to make
Best wishes Al
