Well, after the first spin out this year on my N1, the clutch was sticking so i put it down to being stood over winter, then i went out again and the clutch was stuck again, checked the bike over and oil was coming from the overflow, quick run home and i stood it in the corner in a huff. So today i started to drain the oil..... IMG_3767 by Andrew Jolly, on Flickr Holy S**t, it's like self levelling screed! It gets worse......crack the clutch cover off and this happened...... IMG_3769 by Andrew Jolly, on Flickr Then, once off i'm faced with this..... IMG_3770 by Andrew Jolly, on Flickr So, what was the root cause of the misery? ? IMG_3774 by Andrew Jolly, on Flickr It's a bloody good job i'm fitting one of these! IMG_3750 by Andrew Jolly, on Flickr Now my question is, what engine flush should i use, will it be ok with a wet multiplate clutch?? Job is stopped at the minute because i need a oil pump seal. We'll get there. Andy.

horrible to clean up but at least you got the cause , I had it with a Lotus engine years ago the block went porous , and I had been warned Lotus stood for loads of trouble usually serious mart

I change that seal every time the clutch case comes off, and only genuine Yamaha.A generous coating of red rubber grease to ease it home when refitting the case, and check there are no burrs or rough spots in the case before fitting😉

Cheers mate. Andy.

Normally unless in a rush I first fill the cooling system up and leave the sump plug out of the engine with a drip tray under the engine. Once I'm happy there are no cooling water leakages I refit the sump plug and fill the engine with oil.

I'd be doing the water pump seal too and checking the impeller shaft for excessive wear. I'm not convinced that much water could get into the box through the water pipe seal O ring.

Hi Rich, water pump seal and bearing replaced 1000 miles ago, i have replaced the ones in the new cover, the o ring and clip on the pipe were replaced at the same time, checked the pipe and it's fine, can only be the seal, the flat spot in the picture tells the tale and the seal it very soft! I'm pleased i've got the clear clutch window now so i can keep an eye on it. Andy.

Ouch, that was nasty and could have been worse if you hadn't caught it when you did. Hopefully you only suffered the cost of oil/coolant/seal/gasket time and worry!
