So, got my new crank in, all gear in place, all gears selecting like a swiss watch, cases torqued up, clutch on. Really motoring then, spotted this in my bit box (ice cream tub for the clutch). F*$k. Its the 1/2 moon ring that holds the clutch bearing in place. Im back in the house having a beer and will sort it tomoz. The red sh*te is from the previous owner, pics from when I stripped the engine.

I'm sure we've all done something similar ! At least it's not something inside the main cases ! That would be a ball ache ! Dusty

Could have been worse, you might not have found the half moon. Then you wouldn't have known it wasn't fitted until it was too late. Thank god for small mercies.......but most of all the beer.😁

Finally got my engine back in the frame with carbs, airbox etc.. I fitted a new chain and adjusted it, securing the rear wheel spindle. Then I noticed that the rear wheel was solid- WTF. As I adjusted the wheel back, it tightened the brake , Doh. I know the black should be satin, but I do like the gloss. Incidentally, I fitted a new Yamaha clutch cable and the clutch is as smooth as silk. Someone did mention (think it was midlifecrisisrd) to use genuine parts and yes it does make a big difference.

Reminds me if when I filled up with engine oil but forgot to replace the drain plug. If I had a pound for every time I done that I would have........ about a fiver. Not as rich as I would have liked. And certainly wouldn't pay for the wasted oil. I've always had the habit of turning off my fuel tap when I stop. I used to have a gpx600 that would spew fuel out when filling up unless the tap was left on. Dread to think how much fuel I wasted by keep forgetting that.

The last time I used an Allen key while it was attached to the whole bunch on a ring was working on my rd200. Must have been using them on the reed block housing and had just one side with the head and barrel off, one of the small keys almost like wire had detached from the ring and dropped down the crank out of sight. Put some oil down there and kept turning it over, luckily it appeared, stuck to the crank by the oil. Keys stay loose since.

I did a brand new engine rebuild once, started it up and it purred, so being impatient I decided to take it for a run to get a heat cycle done. Didn’t even look down for a couple of miles I was enjoying myself so much but then I smelled burning. I’d forgotten to put coolant in and left the rad cap off. The temp sender was right in the red. Pushed it home

Thought surely some mistake, then it boiled over, was a mini bus and I used someone’s wellingtons to get water from a stream. That worked for a while until the steam was joined by smoke, stopped at a garage and bought a cheap gallon of oil (never got the money back) that it soon got through, had to drive with my head out the window. Had to get towed back. I mean, multi million pound companies I worked for and they expect you to drive crap that I wouldn’t have as a gift.

Here's one,, when I was a teenager many moons ago my bro had an lc125, micron pipe and a wicked tune,, it would pull the tonne five with 14stone on it,, a beast lol.. So I used to borrow it from time to time, put the odd fiver in it and go see my girlfriend at the time, so my bro says check the oil in the engine first as think it's bit low,, looks in the glass in side of casing at the bottom and couldn't see any, so goes to the garage gets the 5litre can of two store eng oil and fills it up,,, to the top,,of the engine , took nearly all of the five ltrs??, jumps on and it wouldnt kick start,, 5 6 7 times and I'm like feck it ile bump the sod,, as there's a hill ideal outside the house,, first bump,,, nope second nearly but nope.. Third go,, rolling fast now on the pegs and drop the clutch first gear bam she fires ran a bit ruff looked behind me and its total foggy,, two stroke smoke.. Then it dawned, the penny dropped.. Shiiiiiit. Lol quickest oil drop in history lol started first kick once I had the top of the glass only filled lol smoked for a min or two but cleared,,, phew I thought lucky lol,, two days later my bro says do you think the bikes getting a bit flat??? Never noticed bro other day why??? It never ran the same as it did ever again... Till this day he doesn't know why,,,, I do lol,,,.. Older and much wiser now tho?? Maybe lol

Reminds me of filling up one of my bikes with oil. I knew there was a plug that you take out and when the oil gets to that level it dribbles out and you know you've hit the upper limit - but one day I kept putting more and more oil in and it still wasn't dribbling out. I only had a couple of litres and once all that was gone I thought I'd better ride to the garage to get more. On the way there I stopped at traffic lights and noticed that oil was pissing out of the oveflow - I'd taken the wrong bolt out and had just been filling it way over.
