Maybe if you state which model of RD you have, that will help with replies? Also, had the gearbox been fine previously or have you just bought the bike/rebuilt the gearbox for example??

A fairly common issue on Lc's and Pv's it would seem. Oil - use a proven, good quality gearbox oil. Cable - genuine Yamaha in good serviceable condition are the best cables. Adjustment - it needs to be right. After that it gets more involved, with detent arm and shift star mods often proving to help. Dusty

Thanks all, sorry for being bit vague MODEL RD350 YPVS F2 I had the Clutch changed about 7 years ago, I have done about 600 Miles since then, been laid up most of the time, prior to clutch failing and being replaced it used go in neutral fine. I was told to run the new clutch in, then told the cable was worn, hence changing the cable, got it from Norbo, it said made in Japan on it, changed oil still no Joy. just a pain when in traffic, holding the clutch in does knacker your hand after a while . Was thinking maybe the clutch wasn't fitted correctly or me not running the clutch in properly, hence causing a problem. just wanted t rule any other problems before having it opened up.

Has the gearbox got the correct amount of oil because my pump seal failed allowing two stroke oil into the gearbox and finding neutral was difficult

When you replaced the clutch. Was it just the fibres you replaced. It’s usually the metal discs that are the problem. They dish and make the clutch drag a little which make it impossible to get neutral

Do you think that after a while if it is the problem you stated the clutch would wear in?

Was thinking maybe the clutch wasn't fitted correctly or me not running the clutch in properly, hence causing a problem. just wanted t rule any other problems before having it opened up. I have a rebuilt lc on low miles, when I first started running it in I had the clutch free play set to how I thought it should be and also found it heavy, even with a modified actuator arm. As the clutch was biting a fair way out I put extra play in at the lever, finding that I didn’t have to stress my hand so much with so much reach. Just make sure clutch separates enough when lever is pulled to the bar. A fast tickover or certain chain tension might not help. Mine was a sod to get neutral at times, not sure what fixed it as I fiddled with chain tension, adjusted the gear lever down to suit my positioning on the bike which also mean grinding a little off the adjustment rod as it ran out of adjustment too soon for me. That meant the sidestand got in the way so removed it, would space it down but think it would then scrape. And I must say the gearbox is an absolute delight, slick and positive.

Try GL4 Gear Oil ...Went from 10 /40 yama lube to 75/90 gear (same effective weight as 10/40, merely a different numbering system) oil and My finding neutral as the engine progressively warmed up problem magically vanished. Try it?
