I think he must have bought them under the common misconception that they're "better than money in the bank" and now he's trying to recover what he's spent on them.
I was looking at a picture of my little collection the other day and working out what I'd get for them versus what I've spent on them, the difference is just about five figures in the red. It's a good job I don't own them as investments.

I guess it's down to each bike having a way over the top price tag and relying on a sucker coming along every once in a while and stumping up that amount of cash??

Simple economics buy cheap sell expensive, these bikes are still available if you know where to look although these other markets are switching on to the values. Then there are desperate sellers esp at this juncture say you’ve been in lockdown for couple of months, been furloughed? Need some cash? It also works the other way round though, mate has just bought a 911 turbo and got it v cheap as the specialist dealer need the cash.

I guess it's down to each bike having a way over the top price tag and relying on a sucker coming along every once in a while and stumping up that amount of cash?? I think most (perhaps all) have other means of income and aren't relying on regular cash flow from bike sales, so they'll pick up bikes at low prices when they become available, then it costs them nothing to stick them at the back of the shop and just hold them until someone comes along with the right amount of money. I know a couple that sell maybe no more than half a dozen classic bikes a year, probably making 2-3 grand on each one, but in the background they've also got other means of income - in fact I think it's half hobby for them. And as Veg says there are always desperate people looking to sell something, and if no one else is buying then it's opportunists that pick them up for cheap, then hold onto them and punt them back out at a higher cost.

The other thing is if you sell less than 12 a year you aren’t deemed to be a business so no tax to pay on the profit. Win win for small part time sellers.

Unless it’s changed in last few years it didn’t matter if they were Ferrari’s or fords, hondas or heskeths. Most vehicles generally don’t have enough profit to make a living out of if it’s less than 12 I guess was the thinking.
