Any good powder coater will protect the threaded holes/inserts in the frame, however I always put old bolts in all the threads to prevent or minimise any media that may contaminate the threads. Once back home, run a tap through the threads before assembly.

Got the engine completely apart now. I have to say this part scares me. The reason is if I screw something up putting it back together it’s a lot of work to get it apart again. Like has been mentioned though it’s a relatively simple engine. Cases and some other parts are now out for vapour blasting. Carefully put all the parts in order Other parts for cleaning

Interesting read and you’re looking good.
An ultrasonic cleaner will have those cabs looking fresh in 5 mins.
I’m also rebuilding and upgrading everting but haven’t quite got the knack of the picture posting.
Try to ensure your frame number is still readable through the powder coat.

Agree with comment above, but will take more than 5 mins in ultrasonic, but think it was meant as a figure of speech. When you do the carbs, strip out all the brass parts and remove the big brass ball before you put into the cleaner. I usually put each in for min 2 off 20 min cleaning cycles. I clean the brass bits in a separate cleaning cycle.
Great thread and good luck with it, looks like you had a good starting point.

Thanks, and yes Dusty’s posts are an amazing help. Haven’t heard of Arrow for the oil pump before....I’ll check into it.

I’ve been doing all the posting on my phone - way easier for me to post pics.

Before and after pics of the parts I had cleaned with vapour blasting. We plugged all the hole on the carbs to clean up the outside. Wasn’t sure how the fork legs would look but I think they’ll be pretty nice, same with the foot peg brackets

Working on recreating my mangled VIN sticker with date code. I’ve written to Yamaha to see if they can date it for me. My other bike is SN 000782 and was manufactured in 12/80 so I’m estimating 300-400 bikes a month roughly puts 407 at 11/80....maybe 10/80. Anyone know? I’ve also written to VJMC but don’t think the North American club dates bikes. Getting close to the right font I think. Needs to be a bit darker though and bold face is too much.

Good work Gord.
How about changing the 'O' to a '0' (zero) as that might help the font a bit?

I’ve got it as close as it’s going to get. Going to have it printed on a metallic vinyl to try and match the original colour. Funny thing is the font I ended up using is called DIN alternate

what program are you using to layout the sticker?
the best program would be Adobe InDesign, the text can be "squashed" and "pulled" to create better sizing.

Was hoping to re-use the seat foam - got the old cover off today and the foam is starting to break down. Any suggestions on where to order new foam from?

Norbo sells the seat foam and covers in his shop. If you pm him he is also selling a load of seats. He had some good tidy looking ones. Worth asking, very reasonable price aswell considering how much foam and covers cost. I bought a re covered one from him , hopefully be her this week.

New seat foam arrived today. It was interesting speaking with the Phil from P and K Classic Bikes who is the only person in the world who makes molded seats for the LC.

Webike (from Japan) sell foams too, made by Daytona. I have the Daytona seat foam and cover on my 251LC. I also have a P&K foam on my resto LC. Quite different foams, but both good. The sticker came out superbly Gord, well done!
