So, this is what my N1 looked like, in a mate's garage; the tax disc had expired in 1995 and I bought it in 2008. Straight away I stripped it and started getting major items blasted and powder-coated, before a house project intervened. That is now sorted and this lock-down has given me the time to get back to it - at last. I apologise in advance to the purists but as many of the screws, etc. needed chiselling out, it will have a lot of stainless-steel fasteners but I will try to keep it looking reasonably 'standard'. In the intervening years I have managed to pick up standard exhausts, a non-crash damaged set of clocks, a new 'old stock' grab rail and many other bits, whenever they were available. That's better than I thought from your other post
You should see my "n1 bringing it back from the dead" thread
Mine had been left in a damp lock up for 15 years
Enjoy the build

It was originally used on the south coast, I think it survived the sea air fairly well as it was kept in a lock-up and certainly better than if it had been parked outside! Some parts are in surprisingly good condition, others will need replacement but most can be brought back to life with a bit (or a lot) of work. Otherwise I've not found a way to get the caliper joint seals. F & R master cylinders are already sorted.

Steve,s right it didnt look as bad as i thought and it looks great so far, my tzr was so bad the previous owner had painted the wheels yellow and the oxidisation under the paint meant i could have cast a new set and used the paint as a mould because it was coming off in very big pieces ha ha. John.

What a cracking start, no messing about there! I love seeing loads of fresh painted bike parts hanging on bits of wire in the garage/shed. A sign of progress. If you have the facilities to turn down and re sleeve your drop links then go for it. You can get replacements from NK racing in standard and different lengths if you want to alter your ride height Love the pics keep em coming John

John, thanks for the NK suggestion - my lathe is too small to get the arm in, so it maybe a case of getting some new ones instead of paying for machining. Then a YSS shock needed, otherwise I won't be have rolling-chassis. Once that is done, I'll split the bottom end -the fuel drained into crank-case so the crank is not happy! I see that PJME are recommended for re-building crank or Grampian as another option. I'm not looking forward to the crank post-mortem :-( Cheers, Paul

Not a lot to report as it is nitty-gritty cleaning time for the last few 'shiny' black bits and the caliper internals. Off to get the centre-stand blasted today - hopefully. I should get the forks re-assembled this week then waiting on some machining and parts before I can get it 'on its wheels'. In the meantime I'll measure ring gaps, etc. but as the bores still have the honing marks in them and pistons look nearly new, maybe a re-bore won't be required. 20200524_130758 by Paul Ridgwell, on Flickr 20200525_173547 by Paul Ridgwell, on Flickr On a different area - does anyone know how to remove the odometer reset knob on the N1 clocks, as I'd like to get the 'guts' out of the plastic case? No big changes recently but the new Hagon fork springs arrived today and Powerhouse brake caliper rebuild kits have arrived (really helpful people!). New YSS shock ordered from Mutts Nutts, so good progress to report soon, hopefully. Meanwhile it is all about cleaning & painting. Cylinder head sorted but wheels need a good deal of 'elbow grease', re-paint in satin black and polish-up the shiny edges.. 20200601_122638 by Paul Ridgwell, on Flickr

Hi Paul
Not very good at these sort of posts as never normally have the time, but this is just the coolest seeing my old bike although a little shabby. Brought this new in August 1985 from the old Bob Missens that used to be in Trowbridge, long since closed down. Looks like this could be a bit of a long term project as needs lots of TLC. Absolutely marvelous that you are putting the effort in. I found an old foot peg for this bike a while ago while tiding up the garage, brand new one still in excellent condition think it was the right hand side one. I have a horrible suspicion that I threw it away, but I will check the weekend and if I still have it you are most welcome to it. I am gutted if I threw it away I should have though that it could be useful for someone.
Keep the updates coming.
Cheers Nige

Hi Paul
Your lucky day couldn't wait to the weekend so just been rummaging around the garage and found the foot peg and its in immaculate condition, I mean like you have just received it from Yamaha parts counter. I knew I wouldn't have thrown something like that away. So contact me and I will make sure it gets to you. Think the wife has sent you my email address via facebook.
Cheers Nige

Any more progress on this one? Oddly enough, I have just been out in the garage and getting back to work on it - I had to give some TLC to my ZX-7R and the 4-wheeled, tin-box has been 'playing up' :-( I'm re-assembling the carbs and need to sort out the 'h' arm bushes which will allow me to complete the rolling-chassis. I'll add some photographs as progress is made. Cheers, Paul

progressing nicely, haven't touched mine for ages now, in about the same position as you, but mine is a roller. Can't believe I just paid £40 for a horn, and it's not even an anorak build. Keep the pics (and the progress) coming, might inspire me to pull my finger out

Its progressing well, looks like a lovely build.
I also did phosphor bronze bushes for the H arm on some of mine, a damn sight cheaper and a better quality than the OEM plastic.
