I'm considering buying an 86 VF500 and am wondering if anyone here has experience with them?
I've read the engines could need major work even after 20km.
The one I'm looking is in very nice condition, has 20km on it. Asking price is $3,600 CDN which seems high to me.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Most of the problems were with the 750, like a lot of things oil changes should not be neglected. The 500 in fine fettle is a capable bike, if it starts easy ( cold engine ) and sounds sweet, go for it.

Just one thing though, you have to be ok about the 16 inch front wheel, not everyone is, I am.

There used to be a race series over here and the whole field were on VF500s, there is a video on YouTube at Mallory Park of one of the races. The bike that won had a soft shock that bounced and weaved even on the upright, the rider was the great Dave Leach.

I was in the pits at the euro 500 championship round at Donnington, a relative used to look after Jonny Towers's bike.

I have a near identical pic of my vf750, slightly less air than you due to the policeman that would be stood there. Also had brake problems when I rode mates 500 in reverse direction towards the gooseneck, don’t usually do it in reverse and nearly got caught out. Also he crashed it on his birthday on the old Castletown to Douglas road trying to keep up, still blames me. Didn’t help that he had no gloves, was going to buy some but bought himself a bracelet like a bike cam chain and the only injury he had was to his wrist. The police turned up to what they thought was a boy on a cycle, didn’t get heavy, didn’t check anything and just said we only want people to have fun and go home in one piece.

There’s a lot to be said for closely matched bikes, no argument then about ability, have for years taken to cheering on the underdog.

There are no police to worry about during closed roads Senior class practice at the Manx GP :-)

That’s a ridiculous price gord. About 2000 too much I’d say. If it’s immaculate maybe 2-2500.

It had a couple of oil seepage areas on the engine so I passed on it. He told me someone else offered him $2500 for it.
