I did it but my knees are so knackered from 40 years of playing football I had to stop. You get Jo Whiley whispering in your ear for 30 minutes a day :-)

I hope your knees are good, as impact is not the best for them.
I just had a thought...you only get one hour a day for exercise, so if you don't make the 5km in the hour, you may be stranded until the next day :-)

Nice one Veg and 5k is a good target to set yourself if you have been inactive for a while Once you are in the swing of things, a gentle pace will get you 5k (3.1 miles) in about 30 minutes. Proper skinny racing snakes will do it in 15 and not even be out of puff but 30 is a good target to start for. Remember you are not 18 any more and probably in the danger group of middle aged men who have the attitude of " hell yeah, I can do that no bother"and go for it too hard, too fast and pick up an injury or worse!!. Gently to start will win the day A couple of years ago, my daughter talked me into combining a Florida holiday with a running weekend. I had just turned 50 and although relatively fit, I had not run the length of myself in a long time. So we signed up 9 months before the event and started training. We used a method by a guy called Jeff Galloway who advocates interval training and building up to the distance you want. We started in May and ran the marathon weekend in January completing the "Dopey" challenge. Here is a link to the training plan we used so get a decent pair of trainers and out there, but most of all, enjoy. www.rundisney.com/running-training-programs/Don't forget a small bottle of water when you go as hydration is key (and I mean just a small bottle) and sip as you go John

Thanks john I was fit until I went on a career break from the old bill then it went down hill with fitness and an increase in the tabs and beer running my own business and working away from home. I still get out and walk the dogs ( 4 of them) but not real exercise. This is a gentle start I’m realistic I’m 50 running never been my fave I was always more a cyclist but I have to start somewhere and not having had a fag or beer for over 2 weeks I need to do something. 👍

My wife signed up for the couch to 5k a couple of years ago and I thought she’d do a couple of runs then give up as she had never done much running before but she’s still at it now and even done a couple of 10k runs. I think being part of a group helped a lot and it turned into a bit of a social event having a coffee etc after the run but this will be difficult for you if you are rural and with the lockdown at the moment. Her advice is to take it slowly and walk a bit if you have to just don’t sicken yourself by pushing too much at the beginning.

I'd say try cycling but all those t**ts out there at the moment thinking they are on the f**king Tour De Shepperton makes my blood boil. I used to do a lot of mountain biking. My last bike was a mentalist hybrid downhill bike...going down was fast as feck and dangerous, yes I fell off a lot. Going uphill was worse as the bike weighed almost 30kg but what a workout! Nowadays I get exercise from day to day work though a lack of decorating jobs means I'm getting a little less than I'd want to. Still consider myself fit for an old git and yes I smoke...

Alex I’m with Alex on the cycling👍 Is a good way out and almost non weight bearing like swimming I got a knackered knee many years ago but went from a non cyclist to doing the LEJOG in 1 year a couple of years ago as it was always one on my bucket list of things to do Any good luck and stay safe Best wishes always Al

I was always a cyclist up to 10 years ago, most mornings did 12-20 miles and Sunday did 65-100 miles sold my bikes road and mountain and never replaced them. Will probably get a bike once lock down is over determined to get close to what I used to do slowly but surely. I know running may be harder on my knees which aren’t in great shape primarily due to riding and crashing motorbikes but it’s a start for me. Thanks for all the advice, comments and encouragement, much appreciated 👍

viz.co.uk/tag/bicycle/I was amused at the give cyclists 1.5m of room when overtaking them campaign..... And I found it f**king hilarious at their next campaign about people opening their cars doors and knocking them off. Well you lycra f**ktards....if you kept to the 1.5m distance you would not get knocked f**king off. Oh the f'in irony.. I have found them selfish, arrogant, dangerous, and stupid (observed whilst riding my push bike...but I aint no "cyclist".

Hey Veg get a few curries on the hob. Great exercise & rewards at the end. Then go for a run if you feel a bit guilty after eating it

I did it a couple of years ago and then did my local 5k park run to prove to myself that I could do it, but never really kept at it and like others both my knees are knackered from too many years playing football. Now just do a bit of cycling but was considering going back to the running
