Sigh.......
This thread is warts and all isn't it !
Well just been doing heat cycles and one 6 mile round trip to MOT station , but last few times I have started it , there is a noise from the clutch, well that's what I think it is
Now I have fitted a new basket, all new genuine clutch plates (both sets) , new idler gear etc , but when bike is running there is noise from either the clutch side or rear of cases as in gears
But if I pull the clutch in the noise goes
It had all genuine new gearbox bearing too , so to say a little peeved off
I will have to at least pull the clutch cover off and maybe clutch basket etc but I'm stumped at this
Frustrating too as I can't go for a ride to "bed" anything in and see if it settles , but have done about a dozen heat cycle on the drive now
Noise is just at idle , unless I pull the clutch in and if I move up the drive slowly , there is no whine or anything
STUMPED !!!

I have the same on my bike. I have another with engine with all kick start related parts removed and this one is ok.

what sort of noise is it? rattle, shriek, grumble?
Rattle would be idler or plates, shriek is something touching that shouldnt be, grumble is probably a bearing.

Like a louder than normal gear noise Not a rumble rattle Maybe a bit of a shriek ! Idler was new out the bag as I know they wear the bush and then hit the back of the clutch
In fact every second hand one of these I have bought has been fecked

Can you get a video, to give us an idea of the noise ? You can upload vids to Flikr in the same way as a pic. Did you fit the thin shim behind the idler ? Dusty

Yes shim was fitted I could just get my finger in the dipstick hole and idler is firm on the shaft
Seperate question but why does the noise go when you pull the clutch lever in ?
Will try and upload a video

I'd be taking another look at the clutch. The fact the noise changes with clutch actuation means I would go there first. When you pull the clutch lever in you are taking load off the clutch, so when the lever is out the load is back on all parts. The new basket - new cushion rubbers ? Did you screw the back on as Mitaka do, or did you rivet ? I presume the clutch is adjusted properly and you have new oil ? Have you got the large rubber rings fitted between the plates ? Clutches can be noisier without them, though some say they hear no difference.

It was a new old stock basket All new genuine steels too
The clutch action is fine with no clunking into gear or any dragging
I fitted the wider plates off an FZ600 etc , so no large rubber rings fitted
It is matched backlash but the crank gear was second hand and the teeth on the basket are obviously brand new

May just be the plates chattering in the basket
With the clutch engaged the steels and fibres are stuck together and driving the gearbox input shaft. The plates can theoretically chatter back and forth on a rough idle
When you pull in the clutch lever you disengage the the input shaft but there will still be a little drag from the oil so may absorb chatter
Mine chatters like buggery at idle with no rubbers and the wider plates
Either that or the centre bolt is loose or the bearing behind the clutch is shagged

it could be the kick starter gear clattering the idler gear due to wear on the kick starter gear/scroll, or it could be clutch chatter, but first off, what RPM is it ticking over at, if you raise the tickover speed, does the noise go away, I see this alot and raising the tickover by 100rpm can make the difference, when it does, I've put it down to the clutch not having the rubbers fitted between the plates, if raising the tickover speed solves it, I've tended to leave it alone and I've not had any customers come back saying they have had a failure of any sort (touch wood) !

Wait until the wider plates stick together that will put you over the edge

Trying to upload a video but struggling at the moment As Mutts says maybe something to do with the kickstart mechanism but I did shine a light in last night and it looked OK Will have to pull the cover I think Anyone got a spare genuine 0 ring for the coolant pipe I can buy from them please :-)

Standard YPVS engines had a rubber damper behind the outer plastic cover on the clutch side so Yamaha were obviously acknowledging that the clutch could be noisy even when new. You have a clear windowed cover with no damper so any noise will be transmitted straight through. I also wonder if noise from the gear cogs rattling at idle can be transmitted along the shaft and echoed by the outer cover? If you have checked absolutely everything then there's not much more you can do so I wouldn't worry about it.

When i changed plates, springs and left the o rubbers mine clattered too. Puling the clutch on idle changed the sound. 2000miles futher it seems like its gone. May just what Dave said. May be the cork is swollen or soften up?

It could be a combination of the two ?
So have noise from the clutch and noise from the kickstart mechanism ?
Of the kickstart mechanism, what am I actually looking for ? as in wear ?

Likely to be the straight cut gears, they make more noise than std ones mate.

It has standard primary gears Kenny

Come on chaps, think about what you are saying. The clue is in the fact the noise stops when the clutch is pulled in so how can it be the kickstart? It's either going to be the gearbox itself or the clutch pack as the position of the plates changes. Also, I stand by the fact that a windowed cover will let more noise through as the standard one has a rubber damper behind.

Getting it pretty hot on the drive doesn't seem to make any difference
Only done a few miles on road to MOT Station and back
Is the video link working as some say they can't open it ?
