Hi, Im sure we have all heard recently of the legend that is Captain Tom Moore, the old soldier that has so far raised over £17 million quid for the NHS. I stumbled across this picture of him on a Scott 2 stroke. As we all know, our LC,s are not the first water cooled 2 strokes to gain cult status, from what I read that honour lies with the Scott 2 strokes, which also had a bit of a cult following "back in the day." Top man, what a legend indeed. The old boy still has it! Did Scott motorcycles not evolve into Silk motorcycles in the 60s and 70s? Another long lost British manufacturer I am sure they even made a 700cc watercooled 2 stroke twin. I'll need to look that one up

Bugger Dave beat me to it Yes they did, different company originally Scott engines in a spondon engineering frame. Think later there were problems with the motor? Be interested to see what those trophies refer to?

yes, Silk made a 700cc twin water cooled, which originated from the Scott I had never heard of the Silk until I was over at your place and you had one in your workshop. I remember you telling me what it was. I've always fancied a Scott.

Got it running, sorted many issues out that were basically pointing to the fact that the PO needs his spanners confiscating. I've ridden it 5 or 6 times up and down the garden path, seems OK, ready to take it on the road, thought I'd use it this year, decide what needs doing, and sort it over the winter. New radiator definitely needed, not going to be cheap, may try & make one myself. The gear change is the big issue, it's a combined gear lever and clutch, back for low and forward for high. The further you press the pedal, the more the clutch disengages. Bear in mind that it would probably have had footboards originally, maybe factory option footpegs. In either case the gearlever and rear brake are behind the footpegs. The tension on the gearlever is adjustable. So, for modern traffic, you need to adjust it so that in low gear once you take your foot off the pedal it jumps into neutral. It should lock into high gear, but my garden isn't long enough to find out. The front brake is an ornament. I can't imagine how you could possibly do a hill start on it, not enough legs. It's going to be an interesting learning experience. I'm lucky to be surrounded by country roads and villages. Can't see me heading into the city in rush hour any time soon.

What a birthday for the great man. And who can deny the most soulful sound of the Spitfire and Hurricane flying overhead. Brings a gentle tear to a dry eye every time I here them......wonderful stuff

My Dad had a Flying squirrel and guess what he sold it in the late 70s early 80s ffs. They were water cooled parallel twins that pissed all over the 4 strokes of the day 60 years ahead of the LC. One of the bike mags did a ride out with a Scott and a LC. I think Scott were also pioneers of the kick start but I could be wrong as I have been at the wife's gin. I do know that Scott left the company to do other things and after that they stopped being progressive. Even today the bikes are not stupid money.

Indeed, the 2 speeder like mine was the first production bike fitted with a kickstart. It's mounted by the back wheel, and connects to the gearbox with a rod and a short piece of chain. Not easy to use, you straddle the bike & make like a horse and kick backwards and downwards. I had to make a new (longer) rod for mine, as the PO replaced the chain, well most of it, as it was 1 link short and wasn't long enough to allow the ratchet to fully disengage.
