Hi all,I know this has been asked a thousand times and have looked at various answers, but still I have a wobbly flange mmm,ok so 4lo later pipe matching barrels, rhs perfect lhs no matter the configuration it still wobbles ,so just got new gaskets from norbo copper and genuine oval thought this would work but no,so far the only way I've managed to get the exhaust tight is one oval and two round the more compressible paper type ,so now exhaust is dead tight but has not sealed up to face of barrel n each side of oval small gap,now its possible the exhaust clamp is not flat although does look it ,so what's the solution to getting sealed tight fit ,

Is there what looks like a bunch of unravelled wire behind the flange at the end of the exhaust pipe ie on the pipe itself not the oval flange, where it meets the exhaust outlet of the barrel, if so remove it, this is the original "gasket the oval flange used to put pressure on the round seal, and keep reading
If not, keep reading, get yourself a piece of coat hanger, thickish copper wire (or thin strands wound together), or as I did 2, 3 or 4mm stainless rope, you want whatever you use to be squashable, the wire rope I found, once you have the length correct, forms a perfect circle to fit in the recess
Cut your piece of wire to fit on the inner recessed surface of the oval flange, you may need a few attempts to get the length correct, put your round gasket in place, I and few others find the oval acts against it so dispose of that if you wish.
Start with a thin diameter "wire" and attach your exhaust and tighten you should get a better seal, if that's not tight enough go to the next diameter, hence I got 2,3 & 4mm rope, left side was 2mm right was 4mm
You can always add FUEL RESISTANT silicone to the gaskets if you wish, however they will only last so long, Hylomar is probably the best, eventually the goop from the combustion process (unburnt oil/fuel) will seal up any small gaps as it hardens under heat
Most Yamaha mechanics will tell you that the exhausts generally leaked from new in any case

Brilliant thanks, so exhaust flange clean no wire ,old gasket removed from face of barrel, just to be sure I have this correct, put round copper wire or rope etc into round recess of exhaust flange ,put new copper gasket into exhaust port leaving out oval gasket ,great will try this 👍

You can try with the oval gasket if you wish or you can put some Hylomar on it instead
Glad you understood

I had this problem with mine but i had 31k pipes on it, I used two gaskets one copper and one asbestos type, then the oval one on the flange , it took some messing about with to get right but it sorted it eventually

Hi All, New to LCs so first post here! ( have a couple of air cooled bikes and am on the AC forum) Just picked up a 4L0 and need to fix the blowing exhausts which I did by packing some wire behind the flange which made the exhaust tight and seal but bit concerned as these engines seem to vibrate a lot more than my AC and the original problem was engine movement cracking the exhausts/studs
So my question is which is the best solution thats proved over 1000s miles not to cause any cracking problems? (I have later reinforced exhausts but no tiebars)
Cheers

I don’t have an LC only LC2, from what I can remember the later LC’s had tie bars put in and a different set of headers
Someone will be along soon to clarify
