I'm getting my 81 LC recommissioned as it hadn't been running for a few years before I bought it. While I have the Carbs and Oil pump sent over to the UK I thought I'd tidy some of the things up that stand out. Mainly footrest hangers look tatty/stained just wondered is the original finish was polished or has any one used a metal finish powder coat on them? Thanks

Have a look at some rebuild threads on here. I would avoid powdercoat on then, too many oils from their life in the spongelike alloy.

Hi There, Just looked at some sales pamphlets that came with the bike. Just dug them out from the file that came with it. They looked polished to me so thats the route I think I'll take. Thanks

Thanks I think it was a more satin finish. I used a gentle scotchbrite pad and wd40 to clean mine up, then autosol to finish. They came up a treat, with a slightly satin finish. Still look good 2 years on.

Get them vapour blasted then keep rot free with WD or some other corrosion inhibitor.

I have Done mine just before winter, and they still look like I done them yesterday, I had them vapour blasted then used scotch bright wheel in a drill to get the brushed effect, then just covered them in ACF50.

Get them vapour blasted then keep rot free with WD or some other corrosion inhibitor. Dunno why exactly but Autosol leaves a Looong lasting Corrosion free shine ....for Much longer than anything else. Good Stuff.

Reason I vapour blasted them is because you can't keep the backs clean as they are braced and you can get into to clean properly, so vapour blasting gets into all the Buck and grannies, then when done studying easy to just spay ACF50. I did mine back end of last year and the still look like I did it yesterday.
