Got my 31k MOTed today, seems to run fine except the Speedo seems to be reading way too high, at 60 it shows 80. The odometer seem ok regarding the trip mileage so its just the Speedo needle...
Any idea's ??

Open it up and Mark the mechanism when you rotate the needle to 80mph
Then pop the needle off and with the marks aligned as per 80mph fit the needle pointing at 60mph

Has it had a new overlay? If so when you fit them you have to release the needle over its end stop and it usually springs to rest at somewhere around minus 10/20 mph. You are supposed to mark this point so that when you remove and replace the needle you click it back to the same position then ease it over the end stop.

I mark them at 60 as when there is no tension it can settle at slightly different point
Also when you do a kph to mph there may be a difference in the needle stop position
I mark them at 100kph then change the face then refit at 60mph as these are both in the 12 o'clock position
Hope this isn't one of my converted ones 🤔

Thanks guys, the bike is a UK bike and the face looks original so i'll have a look, see what I can do.
So my best bet is to get my phone mounted so I can get a accurate speed, see what the bikes Speedo is reading, that I know how far to move the needle back, does that sound right ?

Yep that's the way
Don't set it exact, add a couple mph for piece of mind

Thinking about it, when I first finished the bike and took it for a few miles shake down run, the Speedo was stuck at zero for a mile before bouncing into life, the bike had been stood for the last 10 years in a garage. The guy had had it 20 years but been off the road the last 10....

Another thing, the temp gauge bounces about, it works ok but seems 'floppy" any pointers for when I take the clocks apart?

If it's lc2 kidney clocks you take the 3 screws out the back case it comes off
Then unscrew the trip knob and remove the screw in the white inner case that holds the front case on
Speedo and tacho are held in by 2 screws at the cable drive
The temp gauge is simply the 3 nuts that hold the wires on
They are the easiest clocks to work on as no individual clock cases or crimped bezels

For the speedo at least: Use your phones GPS to run at the two most use3d legal speeds. Then place a wee coloured sticky dot onto the speedo face at the correct location. Yess a bodge but easy, accurate And reversible. A no brainer :-)
