Other than gathering parts and ripping the engine apart again, not a lot of progress has been made on this. I cannot believe it is almost a year since the last update on this So today, I dragged the frame out and set about a job I should have done a long time ago. When I picked this project up, a previous owner had welded a steel plate across the bottom of the frame to fit a tie bar engine into the earlier frame. A bit too Heath Robinson for me (and I am not normally too bothered about functional bodges) however this had to go. Shame too as the frame had a decent powdercoat job and done relatively recently too. Out with the grinder and cutting disc Then a flap disc to clean up the rough bits for some welding. During the summer I picked up a frame section with tie bar lugs from Steve midlifecrisisrd and with a bit of patience I managed to liberate them from their welds. After a quick brew, it was off to my mate Keith for a spot of welding A set of empty cases were bolted in with tie bars to make sure everything lined up correctly then fire up the mig. Tomorrow I will tidy the welds and give the bare metal a coat of paint to keep the corrosion away until I decide whether to strip and re-powder the frame or just paint the affected area and dress it in as best I can. This is a non matching numbers build and will be for function not show so effort/cost will be the decider I think. My next job is back to the motor. I have two complete engines (stripped) both 4L1 bottom ends, one has a new re-lined 350 top end and the other is a newly done Fahron 370. It is my intention to fit the 370 and possibly sell the other one but not sure at the moment. I did however recently pick up an "exceedingly good" engine from a forum member which will go in at some point but it will be standard(ish) looking 370 motor for now. John

Good lad π
Nice to see the frame section getting good use
As for refinishing it I'm always nervous about blasting a second time, especially with the difficulty of removing powder coat and the feint VIN numbers
If you take it to Wheel Pro Scotland in Bailieston (beside the m8 around that horse statue) they don't have a blasting machine but will dip it, heat it in the oven to vaporize the chemical then recoat it
I've not had them coat a frame for me but I did get them to strip my N1 frame before I had it welded
They have powdered many cases, wheels, swing arms for me and it has always been a fine coat and faultless
Steve

Thanks guys This has been on the back burner for so long now I really do need to get a move on. Good thing is though, the old bracket on the frame has been the hold up in doing anything further so now it will be some steady assembly time. Thanks for the info Steve on Wheel Pro in Ballieston. I'll give them a shout and see what their prices are like and take it from there. John

Cases back from vapour blasting. These are replacements for the set with the chain damage I patched up earlier. They are in much better nick too.

Slightly out of sequence here but I thought I should be getting this thread back up and running again in some sort of order. There were a few niggles with the motor I built so I pulled it apart for sorting out Getting the lump back together for starters Gear clusters in Then the new crank supplied by PJME. Cheers Paul Some threebond on the faces and the cases are back together More to follow John

Nightmare when you have to pull them back apart π What was wrong? Steve Hi Steve First set of engine cases I was using had a helicoil repair to one of the three short bolts at the rear of the case halves. Unfortunately the repair was not quite straight and the bolt went in at an angle causing the bolt to bind in the top case. I could not really gauge if I had tightened it up enough because of the bind so it was always playing in the back of my mind. OCD kicking in The cases also had some chain damage at the usual bit but not too bad, plus some corrosion pitting on the top so it was always my intention to source another set. This resulted with the swap over. Done now and I have a spare set of cases to fix up or sell. The build is at last now back on track John

Worth the effort now John. If you had a leak from that bad repair, you would forever kick yourself for not doing it ( I know I would !!) Looking great mate Dusty

Checked the ring gaps at the weekend 0.45mm and fitted them to the pistons. Then it was time to get the top end fitted. Fahron 370 using DT200 Prox pistons. These are 0.25 as that is what was available at the time. Not bothering me as it is unlikely I will ever need to rebore them further unless.......... Then got the head ready. Ron did a great job of machining the 250 head to match the new cylinders Then button the whole lot up Next job is to fit the power dynamo John

Spoke to him ladt week and he said mines next π,he did do a lovely job of your head π Yes Chris He does a great job and a cracking guy to deal with. Had me laughing every time we spoke on the phone. Took close to six months to get the cylinders and head back and they have been sitting for a year waiting to get fitted. Looking forward now to getting the whole thing finished for this summer π€₯ Johnπ

Looks a lovely job John Well worth the wait Yeah Dusty Given the time it has taken me to get my finger out the wait for the conversion seems irrelevant. Got a bit of a charge on just now so we will see how far we get this time π Johnπ

Just a Quick one, i know we did the crank, but what small end bearings are on it ? 250 OR 350 ones Hi Paul 350 ones buddy. I double checked with the vernier just to make sure plus a comparison with the 250 ones which arrived with the rebored 250 cylinders and pistons. Also measured between the pin bosses on the pistons. Paranoia or what? Nice to know the wise engineers are watching over, keeping us on the right path π Johnπ

Managed an hour in the garage last night and fitted the Vape power dyno Really nice piece of kit and fitted with no drama. Used the clock to time at 2mm BTDC Used a permanent marker to mark TDC and 2mm before so I can check with the strobe once running. Another job ticked off John
