Good job on the rad repair John I found an odd carb top in the shed yesterday - I will pop a pic up - it may make a pair for you Dusty Cheers Dusty I believe one of the tops is an aircooled one but haven't checked it out properly. Carbs are a while away yet. Hopefully I will pick up my bottom case today, got the gearshaft bush done on it, and then I can at least build the bottom end. PJME are still in posession of my cylinders so the top end continues to be on hold. Go slo resto. John

I will dig it out and post a pic. You are welcome to it if it makes a pair Paul and the PJME team are very busy at the mo. Lockdown has meant everyone has taken the time to redo their engines ! My powdercoat guy is the same. Took a month to get my barrels back, usually it's a week ! The good guys are always busy - now even more so ! Dusty

Got my bottom engine case back, freshly fitted with a new gear shaft bush. My local engineer and top Laverda guru Keith Nairn milled the hole out and fitted the bush in jig time. The bush is sitting just a little proud so I will pull it in a little further with the trusty drawbolt method I used on the PV motor. Picked up another load of bolts, washers and nuts from the plater (done in olive this time), including crankcase bolts so the dilema of the stainless fasteners is now gone. And finally got a bit more painting done Now to deal with the elephant on the bench John

Painted cases look great John Here is the carb top; 20200530_093929 by dusty miller, on Flickr If it's correct, that makes the right side carb in your pic the one with an aircooled top. These are my aircooled carbs; 20200530_094022 by dusty miller, on Flickr You are welcome to it if it makes a pair Dusty

Again absolutely no hurry for this buddy as it looks like this will be a real slow build. Just invested in a set of Mikuni RS36s for the Laverda so funds are taking a beating at the moment. ☹️ I’ll pm you John😉

Got another little job out of the way Taking stock of what I had and what I needed to find, I noticed the little wire cable clamp which sits on the top crank case was broken. These for some reason are not the easiest items to find so I decided to have a go at fixing this one. Out with the wire coat hanger and the snips. Using the old one as a template and a pair of pliers I bent the wire into shape Using the Dremel I ground out the old broken piece from the flat plate and using a low temp brazing rod, joined the new piece in place Then it was off with a load of other parts for re plating in olive (sad I know )

Super work OBG! Any chance you can supply dimensions? Hi Jonw I’ll gladly measure it up and share with the forum. I’ll sketch it out and post a pic with sizes later tonight hopefully. John

Thanks John, really appreciate it mate.
I reckon I could make one easily enough, the hardest part will be bending the flat steel part to loop over the coat hanger. I also have a plating run to do, so its perfect timing really.

You don’t mind taking on most things, really enjoying the build.Good on you mate. Yeah Baz I will have a go at most things. If I can fix something or refurb original parts then I will do it. I am not a OEM purist however I enjoy the satisfaction of tidying something up rather than just sourcing a complete replacement, especially when some parts are impossible to find or priced ott. I am also not a concours builder, I just want a tidy useable bike at the end of the day. Same as yourself I have also run out of room to work as I am in competition for space in the hut/garage. Spanner al fresco is the norm now. Hope to gets bit more done today before the rain we are expecting later. 🙂 John

Started on the motor this weekend Fitter the selector drum, forks and rods with new circlips Then followed by the retainer plate with a dab of loctite on the threads New bearings were fitted to the gearshafts, gen Yam ones except for the bearing behind the clutch. I fitted one of the stronger German double roller types supplied by 4LO4ever. The bearing I took out had a bit of play in it but this one is super smooth with absolutely no movement at all. And a new circlip too. New seals fitted on the crank And the kickstart idler gear with new bush fitted too. Thanks again to Rob (4LO4ever for a top job) Then with a smear of three bond along the mating faces, the cases were back together I fitted a new sprocket seal and clutch pushrod seal before joining the cases as I think it easier than when everything is buttoned up. I also fitted a new pushrod while I was at it as the old one has a groove worn in it at the point where it sits against he seal. Still baffles me how a rubber seal can wear a groove in a hard steel shaft no matter how it is explained.
Cylinders are due back this week so hopefully I'll get this finished by next weekend

God knows what number that is lol The cut bearing retainer crescent is a racer mod to allow the engine to be split without removing the clutch basket Steve I had same thing with mine and wondered how it had broke. Makes sense now, mine was bought off a guy who said he raced it.

Yes very similar, a circle at the top into a triangle then a square at the bottom with the ends meeting in the middle.

I seem to have been spending a fair bit of time doing loads of stuff but not actually achieving much. Is that just me? I have been gathering loads of little odds and ends but this has been in conflict with several other domestic demands resulting in very little actually being done to the build. Sound familiar? I thought I should really update a bit on the build and did manage make some (a little) progress on the motor Clutch cover got rebuilt. New water pump seal fitted taking care it was in the right way round Then the new bearing Next it was a new oil pump shaft seal Then fitted the gears with new washers/pins/clips etc Next it was fitting the newly re sleeved barrels and pistons Then a new set of head bolts and re-plated washers Then it was time to get the head back on Engine just about finished and ready to go back into the frame. However the sickness has got me and motor no2 is now also on the go. This one (another 250 motor)is getting a Fahron job done on the top end at the moment, crank is also being rebuilt as we speak, and all the bits for a gearbox rebuild are in the spares box so I may do a separate short thread on this when I get going. Stuck the reed blocks and carbs on for a final pic before I make a start on the front end.

Tidy looking motor John , great work. And yes, the bug is well and truly caught by the looks of it !! Dusty Thanks Dusty Motor has turned out nice and is brand new inside so will need run in when I get it going. I blame this forum entirely for the "bug". I had no intention on doing another motor just to have a spare, but it all started with the replacement cases I picked up before I fitted the small ally plate at the usual chain damaged bit. It is growing into something else though I have totally run out of space too so will need to move something on soon. Just need to decide what but it will not be the 31k. DVLA are dragging their heels on that one and even though it is done, MOTd and running sweet as, i need to enjoy it first before I even considered that. No log book yet . Decisions! John

Looking mint mate
Ouch on the new head bolts 😖
Could maybe have sorted used ones for you as just had some done for my "parts guy"
Funny how they come in pairs. Finished the 350lc engine for a mate but even after he has collected it there seems to be 3/4 of another I keep tripping over 🤔

Hi Steve New head bolts were not actually too bad as I got them with a load of other parts for the new motor and got a bit of a discount on the total, which was nice. I should have learned by now to thoroughly check a disassembled engine project is all there, as the fasteners are always overlooked when checking the big bits. Spoke to your buddy about the job you did on his motor when I was getting the 31k MOTd. He is well chuffed with what you have done. And yeah, it doesn't take long for parts to breed and gather around the garage/shed when you think you are making a bit of headway and clearing them away. Hobby or illness, they are closer related than we like to think John
