That is nice Dusty, really neat job. I totally agree on the apprehension before taking a cutting wheel to a part which is no longer easily available if things go a bit Pete Tong. If only we knew back then how scarce these parts would become. Having a bit of a hiatus myself with the LC and also been gathering parts ready for the big push. This 400 of yours though is coming on great and I’m really looking forward to the next bit. John😉

That's neat Dusty. Is it going to sit in flush as in the older pic?

Hi Probably sit flush although I will experiment a bit first, especially as I intend on mounting the number plate bracket off the light bracket, which is not something I did last time. Dusty

Bought the tank in from the shed now the weather is changing. Popped it on the bike today; 20201017_103037 by dusty miller, on Flickr I was originally thinking of standard white paintwork with red decals, but I like the Tz style Tuning fork logo with Yamaha below it. May start thinking about a Tz inspired theme on this build too. Dusty

I think the paintwork will mirror the cafe bike with a central red stripe. It's my favourite scheme, and as it's a hybrid, I can sway from standard but still keep the Yamaha theme. Alex, that's Sam's Corsa - I still have my van Really handy for getting a bike in the back !! Dusty

Nothing much doing at the mo - waiting for the Allspeeds which "may" be next week. One thing I have been thinking of doing is setting up a temperature gauge to monitor the temp at the heads. Not really an essential thing but I fancied doing it on this build. I bought a top yoke gauge mount from Andy - Spondon440 - to fit the billet yokes he made; 20201103_092450 by dusty miller, on Flickr This is designed for the Koso digital temp gauge a lot of us fit on our watercooled bikes. But looking on the Digital speedos website, I found a Koso unit that will measure 2 cylinders, so allied with a pair of pick ups that fit under the spark plugs, I bought that unit. I knew before hand that the new unit is 3 mm wider than the one the yoke is designed for, so I popped over to another engineering guy I have found who specialises in Milling, and he is gonna mil back each side so the gauge is a good fit in the recess. Another job was the rear light bracket. Visited my local guys for this one, and Clive gave me an offcut of 3mm ali so I could cut out the initial shape (saves time and money). I will drop it back today so he can drill the elongated holes and bend the plate to the correct angle; 20201103_201859 by dusty miller, on Flickr Dusty

Another fantastic bike in the making Dusty. Love your threads and the photography puts me to shame. Its always an after thought for me to take pics so tends to be taken with my dirty phone lens in poor light! Thanks for sharing.

Cheers Shaun These modern phone camera's make life easy when it comes to the pics. I'm no "David Bailey", but I do try and document everything if I can. I've referred back to the pics from another 400 build 11 years ago for the rear light mod; rear light bracket 006 by dusty miller, on Flickr rear light 001 by dusty miller, on Flickr

Hi mate Once the Allspeeds turn up, I can work out where the footrest plates need to fit, as I'm hoping that the rear exhaust mounts can use the same hole as the footpegs bolt through. Once the plates and pipes are sorted, it's then a bracket for the rear brake cylinder to be made, buy a Brembo rear caliper and all the brake lines, fit the loom and cables, buy a battery and I need an Rgv speedo drive too. Then it's paint, but I wont look at that until next year now. Engine is all done though, and once pipes and loom are on can certainly be run up for the first time Dusty

Picked up the modified temp gauge/handlebar clamp today; 20201106_163911 by dusty miller, on Flickr 1.5mm milled off each side so the temp gauge is a nice snug fit now. Glad I didn't try to file it back !! Rear light is at my other engineering place - hopefully pick the bracket up next week. Steve (midlife) also put me onto a NOS speedo drive on ebay too (cheers mate ), so bought that for less than half Suzuki's current price, so that was a result. Once the pipes arrive I will have a day in the garage and do a few jobs in one go. Dusty

Hi Tony I've already touched it in with a thin coat of paint. You couldn't really see any of the silver anyway as the gauge fills the gap perfectly, but I did it anyway. Dusty

Allspeeds turned up this morning 20201124_095357 by dusty miller, on Flickr Super excited to get these. Last pair of new Allspeeds I bought was about 1986/7. Glad I went for chrome in the end as I think they will really suit the bike. I now have a few parts waiting to be fitted, and the pipes need to work around the wider swingarm, so there is some fettling to be done with footrest plates. After a few weeks of inactivity with the bike, I'm hoping to get going again Dusty

They look superb Dusty and well worth the wait. Will look great on the bike. Proper period for the aircooled Same as yourself I have been gathering bits n bobs for the bike but not done a thing to it for months now. Struggling to make time but hopefully start putting things together soon and update the thread John

Cheers guys Ive got a load of decorating on at home at the mo, so pretty busy during the day, but I did offer up the left side pipe this evening. This is the side that I was most concerned about as it needs to clear the chain and side stand mount. Initial look seems like it can clear everything with no issues so that's good. I may need to redesign the footrest back plate - not definite yet. I decided to fit the mounting stubs to the barrels with new exhaust gaskets; 20201124_190502 by dusty miller, on Flickr The design of the stubs has changed over the years. The spring mounts are welded onto the stubs which is much better than the seperate little plates that used to mount under the bolts/nuts that fixed to the barrels, plus the spring mounts are now offset so the outer springs dont come into contact with the frame tubes; 20201124_192240 by dusty miller, on Flickr 20201124_195532 by dusty miller, on Flickr I know these details are standard on most aftermarket exhausts nowadays, but my old Allspeeds predated those little improvements !! Hi Alex Yea, I agree. I wanted Allspeeds as that's what I had on my 430, and think they are the best looking pipes on an aircooled 400 (imo !) I'm not after any performance gains, just great looking, and sounding spannies ! It was 10 weeks from initial order to delivery, so not too bad compared with some of the Allspeed waiting times from the past. Dusty

Nice!
its a good design, the Microns Im using have that "fixed manifold" design, it makes removal and fitting of the pipes much quicker. saves having to fiddle about with nuts every time.

Had an hour this afternoon to sort out fitting the left side pipe. These Allspeeds are 400e fitment, but with the rear mounting brackets welded on in the "D" models position - the C and D model Rd's had a separate rear pillion plate that also acted as the exhaust mount. Once the pipe was offered up, it was apparent that my alloy rearset plates would sit higher then the original "D" bracket would sit. I didn't want the hassle or expense of sourcing new alloy plate and getting it cut out, so I made an alloy extension bracket that bolts to the pipe, and then to the rearset plate; 20201201_191814 by dusty miller, on Flickr I had done the same on my old 430e years ago when I modded the downpipes for the 430 conversion. It needs a final polish, but the bracket should blend into the chrome on the pipe once it's been blinged up a bit ! Need to do the same for the right side now, plus make a bracket for the rear master cylinder. Dusty
