Right chaps what's the best way to do this, Just bolt the tap to the tank over the paint or
take the paint off round were the seal fits any advise and experience on this is welcome

Just a post to say I’m watching, my painter is going to remove the paint around the filler neck and tap even though it’s 2k and he says it will be ok.

When mine have been pro painted the area the tap covers was masked off and not painted. Same applies for the paint around the filler hole edge. I think petrol can travel under paint and damage it if you aren't careful.

Dusty All fair points about petrol getting under the paint etc but what do the pro painters say about the possibility of preventing moisture/rust on those unpainted areas I'm wondering?? |

Mine were masked off and left unpainted by my pro painter
In my case the oil/fuel mix probably coats the bare metal so it doesn't rust, perhaps fuel only does the same
My newer bikes don't have paint around the filler either, nor does the missus' 98 Monster

I always dremel off the paint around the filler cap and the fuel tap. It quickly gets under the skin and not worth the risk.
