Can these be taken apart/cleaned/fixed I'm wondering? Is there a ball bearing/detent involved, is that what keeps the knob in the out position?? Even back in the day, I'm sure that mine would pop back in by itself whilst going down the road,......I put it all down to the vibration of the engine.

They can be be cleaned by sliding back the rubber and removing the clip that hold the plunger out (clip looks like a capital D with a peice missing) you can squeeze the clip together a bit to help the plunger stay out but what I found is DONT lube it because it just doesn't want to stay out when pulled.

Hi I`ve fixed a couple of them, both of them had the rubber spilt which i just fixed with super glue, it seems to me that it`s just friction that holds it onto the slighty tapered shaft. But if all fails I will try the cheaper option for sure.
